Boston Red Sox: Teams Are Talking to the Red Sox About Roster Congestion

The Red Sox have yet to formally announce any of the moves they’ve made over the last few weeks.

Two weeks ago, the Red Sox agreed to terms with left-handed pitcher Martin Perez on a one-year, $5 million deal.  The Red Sox followed up the Perez re-signing by agreeing to terms with utilityman Kiké Hernandez.  Two days after the Hernandez agreement, Boston added Garrett Richards on a one-year deal.  On Monday, Boston acquired right-hander Adam Ottavino from the Yankees.

All of these moves are being held up from formally being announced due to the logjam on the 40-man roster.  How will the Red Sox clear spots on the 40-man roster to add their new players?

Speculation is running rampant as to what Boston will do with Dustin Pedroia.  Reports are saying that the team and Pedroia could come to an agreement to free him off the 40-man.  With the likelihood that Pedroia will be hanging up his cleats, Chaim Bloom needs to make some important decisions.

The Red Sox could designate for assignment players and free up the much needed space on the roster.  There are some candidates that could be DFA’d by Boston.  Jeffrey Springs, recently claimed Joel Payamps or Marcus Walden could be victims of the roster crunch.

Another option is to possibly trade outfielder Andrew Benintendi or infielder Michael Chavis.  Both players are coming off down years in the shortened 2020 season.  Benintendi is coming off a disastrous 2020 season where he played in only 14 games.  He would wind up on the injured list and miss the remainder of the season.

Benintendi has potential trade value despite the down season.  He is only 26-years old and  has two years left of team control.  That could be very appealing to a small to mid-market team who has prospects to trade.

There has been some recent optimism regarding Benintendi.  The former No.7 overall pick appears to be in great physical shape and coaches are reporting he’s in a good place mentally.  Red Sox hitting coach Tim Hyers was in Nashville, Tenn., to see Benintendi and he spoke to reporters about his left fielder.

“He’s a better player than that.  And so I think he’s more eager and energetic to get back and get started and get back on track.  Obviously, I think motivated is a good word... Benny believes in himself.  I believe in him.  And I think he wants to prove to the fan base in Boston that he’s worked hard and ready to get back on track.”

Chavis could be traded with the recent acquisition of Hernandez.  After being promoted to the big leagues in 2019 and making an impact, major-league pitching has figured out Chavis.  Last season the Ice Horse appeared in 42 games hitting .212 with five home runs and drove in 19 runs.  In two seasons in the big leagues, Chavis has struck out 177 times in 137 games.  His big swing might cost him a spot with the Red Sox.  The former first round pick isn’t eligible for free agency until 2026.  Teams could be looking to acquire the versatile 25-year old Chavis.

One other name that could be traded is reliever Ryan Brasier.  In 25 appearances with Boston last season, he went 1-0 with a 3.96 ERA in 25 innings.  The bullpen will feature Ottavino, Matt Barnes, Darwinzon Hernandez, Josh Taylor and Matt Andriese.  With others like Brice, Phillips Valdez, Garrett Whitlock and Daniel Gossett in the mix, Bloom could look to trade Brasier for depth in his system.
