Boston will receive outfielder Franchy Cordero from the Royals and pitcher Josh Winckowski from the Mets.  The deal was first reported by MLB Network’s Jon Heyman and MLB.com’s Jon Morosi.  Boston will also send the Royals $2.8 million to help cover his salary.

The Athletic's Chad Jennings is reporting that the Red Sox could receive as many as five players total in the Benintendi trade.  It is expected that the Red Sox will receive three PTBNL back in the trade.  Boston has informed Benintendi of the trade and it is expected the deal will be announced by the end of the night.

MassLive's Chris Cotillo is reporting that the Red Sox will likely have time before deciding who the PTBNL will be.  These players could be significant in return due to Boston sending money to offset Benintendi's salary.

Benintendi appeared in only 14 games last season after suffering a rib cage injury that ended his season.  The 26-year-old former first-round pick hit .273 with 51 home runs and 260 RBIs in 485 games over five seasons in Boston.

The Red Sox were set to pay Benintendi $6.6 million in 2021 and $5 million of that would count against the competitive balance tax threshold.  With this impending trade, it will open up more money for Boston to spend and improve their roster.

Cordero comes to the Red Sox having played 95 career major-league games.  He appeared in four seasons with the Padres and Royals where he hit .236 with 12 home runs.  The Padres traded the former prospect to the Royals for a left-handed reliever.

The 26-year-old Cordero can play all three outfield positions and should compete in training camp.  There is speculation that the Red Sox will add to their major league roster to replace Benintendi.  Cordero will join Alex Verdugo, Hunter Renfroe, Jarren Duran and new comer Kiké Hernandez as potential outfield options.  Boston could look to re-sign Jackie Bradley Jr. or even familiar face Kevin Pillar, who are both free agents.  There is no rumored connection with Pillar at this time.

The versatility of Hernandez could have played a factor in this trade.  Furthermore, it gives the Red Sox options to platoon players in different spots of the diamond if they don't reach back into free agency.

Scouting report from 2017 MLB Pipeline

Winckowski, 22, is a former 15th-round pick who was already traded this winter, going from the Blue Jays to the Mets in a deal for left-hander Steven Matz.  He split time between Single-A and High-A in 2019 with a 10-8 record with a 2.69 ERA.  Prior to the trade to Boston he was ranked the 26th-best prospect on in the Mets system.  The Red Sox were ranked with the 20th best minor league system according to Baseball America today.  It's not known where Winckowsi will land within the Red Sox rankings, but he should impact them immensely.

He is tall and lean with plus pitchability according to MLB Pipeline.  Winckowski relies heavily on a sinker that averages around 93 mph and a slider that is a solid out pitch.  Look for Winckowski to project as a multiple innings pitcher or a reliever once he makes it to the big leagues per MLB Pipeline.
