Boston Celtics: Firing Brad Stevens Or Danny Ainge Is Not The Answer

The Boston Celtics are having a less than desirable season.  Last night the Celtics dropped another game to the Dallas Mavericks 110-107, bringing them to a record of 15-16.  Boston sits sixth in the Eastern Conference and 5.5 games behind the 76ers.

The Celtics have been Jekyll and Hyde all season.  They show flashes of brilliance and will dazzle on the court.  Then Mr. Hyde checks into the game and they can’t hold a lead and they seem to lose focus.

Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown are the only bright spots for the team at this point.  The young duo received All-Star bids and it should be the first of many for the two.  Tatum received his second All-Star bid, and Brown has earned his first.

The future is bright, but the here and now, they stink.

Boston is not a compelling basketball team this season.  This basketball team is completely uninteresting to watch and Green Teamers have taken notice.

Fans on social media have started to blame Head Coach Brad Stevens more, some calling for him to lose his job.  Others have begun to hold Danny Ainge to the fire asking for him to step aside and bring a new vision on 100 Legends Way.

Firing Stevens or Ainge is not the answer.  Ainge got this team into this mess, he deserves the opportunity to fix it.  Reportedly Ainge has been trying to unload Kemba Walker to free up money and gain assets back.

Trading Walker is going to prove difficult.  According to NBA Insider Ric Bucher, who was on Colin Cowherd’s podcast, talked about teams being upset with Ainge.

"A lot of GMs are ticked off at Danny [Ainge] because Danny tried like hell to move Kemba [Walker] at the beginning of the year, knowing that his knee wasn't right.  He was trying to get rid of damaged goods.  And that's the issue that Kemba is dealing with, and at his size, it's a little bit like Isaiah Thomas.”

Walker has struggled since returning from his knee injury on Jan. 17.  He is shooting a career-worst 37 percent from the floor and only averaging 17 points per game.  The point guard is in the second year of a four-year, $141 million contract he signed in 2019.

The NBA Trade deadline is still weeks away and Celtics fans can be certain Ainge is checking out all his options.  The Celtics need more scoring off the bench and a big man in the middle to give them more than Tristian Thompson and Daniel Theis.  Boston could also look to upgrade Jeff Teague, who has been disappointing this season.

Firing Stevens is not the answer.  This is not a Stevens problem, this is an Ainge roster construction problem.  The Celtics Head Coach has had a history of elevating his players and getting the most out of the roster.  While this season it appears Stevens is struggling to connect with his team, his team needs help. That help must come from Ainge.

Ainge is always looking for the best deal and maximizing value for players.  The championship window is not closed, this team can be salvaged and they can build this team into a perennial contender.  Ainge needs to fix this and quick, because if he can’t then its fair to ask "where do the Celtics go from here?"
