Red Sox Sign Marwin Gonzalez - Reunites with Alex Cora

The Red Sox and free-agent infielder Marwin Gonzalez have agreed to a one-year, $3 million deal, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan and Mark Feinsand.  The deal will also include about $1 million in performance bonuses.

This deal comes a day after the Red Sox traded outfielder Andrew Benintendi to the Royals in a three-team deal.  Gonzalez, who will turn 32 next month, will provide versatility and depth for Manager Alex Cora.  The switch-hitting Gonzalez will provide depth in the outfield and platoon in the infield.

The addition of Gonzalez gives the Red Sox two versatile options on their big league roster.  He will join Kiké Hernandez as another utilityman option.  Gonzalez is expected to see the most time between left field and first base.  In Gonzalez, this gives Boston a left-handed platoon option over at first base to compliment Bobby Dalbec.

Gonzalez is fresh off a two-year stint with the Minnesota Twins.  Last season, he hit .211 with five home runs and 22 RBIs.  In 2019, he played 114 games with the Twins hitting .264 with 15 home runs, 55 RBIs and a slash line of .322/.414/.736.

The new Red Sox switch-hitter is most known for his time in Houston where he spent seven seasons and won a World Series.  In parts of seven seasons in Houston, he hit .264, 76 home runs with 292 RBI’s.

The addition of Gonzalez will reunite him with Cora, who was the bench coach with the Astros while he was there.  While with Cora, he hit .303, hit 23 home runs and knocked in 90 RBI’s.  He was a super utility player for the Astros during his time in Houston.

This is the second-stint that Gonzalez will have in the Red Sox organization.  He was selected by Boston in the Rule 5 draft back in 2011 from Cubs.  He was then dealt to the Astros for pitcher Marco Duarte.
