Today's featured player:  Nick Pivetta

Nick Pivetta is coming into this season looking to earn a permanent spot in the Red Sox rotation.  The new Red Sox starter made two starts last season after spending time at the alternate site in Pawtucket.  How will the 28-year-old right-hander preform in Boston this season?

Back of the baseball card:

  • Position: Starting Pitcher
  • Age: 28
  • Bats: Right / Throws: Right
  • Height: 6-5 / Weight: 214lbs.
  • Pronounced: pih-VEH-tah
  • How acquired: Trade with the Philadelphia Phillies in 2020, acquired with starting pitcher Connor Seabold for relievers Brandon Workman and Heath Hembree.

2020 Highlights:

  • Made two starts for the Red Sox, 10 innings pitched and two runs given up
  • On 8/21 the Red Sox acquired Pivetta and Seabold from the Phillies for Workman and Hembree.
  • Recalled on September 22nd vs. Baltimore – 5.0 IP, 1R, 4H, 8K and 3 BB. First Red Sox pitcher to make his team debut with 8 K’s. Other player to do that was former Red Sox lefty David Price.
  • September 27th vs. Atlanta – 5.0 IP, 1R, 4H, 5K and 2 BB. In both starts with the Red Sox he allowed one run in the first inning and then went scoreless the next four innings of work.

Red Sox Podcast to be Named Player Outlook:

Pivetta has been sharp this spring and earning a spot in the Red Sox five-man rotation this season.  The right-hander has made three starts this spring earning a 1-1 record over those starts.  He went nine innings while only giving up three runs.

At the end of last season, Red Sox fans were able to see some flashes from Pivetta and what he could potentially become.  Boston was able to beat out Tampa Bay in acquiring Pivetta from the Phillies.  With Eduardo Rodriguez the opening day starter, Pivetta will slot in nicely at the back-end of the rotation.

In order for Pivetta to be competitive, they will need him to be consistent all season long.  Following his last start this spring, Pivetta commented he wants to get his curveball over for strikes more.  He will also need to focus on getting out of the first inning quicker.  In his only two starts in Boston he had tough first innings but settles down quickly.

Pivetta has shown more velocity this spring which has helped him secure that rotation spot.  This season, he is projected to make 18 starts over 34 games for the Red Sox.  From a fantasy baseball perspective, he is projected to go 6-8 with a 5.03 ERA while throwing 105 innings.  These projects are mainly due to the fact of his past history in Philadelphia.  There is a lot to be excited about with Pivetta since he has come to Boston.  If he is healthy and pitches with consistency, he could be a nice find for Chaim Bloom and a major piece for the Red Sox future.
