Boston Red Sox 2021 Player Preview: Xander Bogaerts

The Syndicate's Red Sox Writers and Red Sox Podcast to be Named Later hosts will be profiling a different Red Sox player each day to get you ready for the 2021 season.

Today's featured player: Xander Bogaerts

Entering his ninth season with the Red Sox, Bogaerts has often found himself becoming more and more of a leader in the clubhouse every spring.  After an All-Star season in 2019 in which he finished fifth in AL MVP voting, Bogaerts was still productive in the shortened 2020 season, finishing the year hitting .300 with 11 home runs and 28 RBIs.

Back of the baseball card:

  • Position: Shortstop
  • Age: 28
  • Bats: Right / Throws: Right
  • Height: 6-2 / Weight: 218 lbs.
  • Nickname: Bogey, X, the X-Man
  • How acquired: Discovered at age 16 and was signed to a $410,000 contract in 2009. He then made his professional debut in the Dominican Summer League with the DSL Red Sox in 2010.
  • Contract status: Signed through 2025
2020 Highlights:
  • Bogaerts' .300 average ranked second on the Red Sox last season, just behind Alex Verdugo, who hit. 308 in his first season in Boston.  Bogaerts was also tied with third baseman Rafael Devers for the most home runs on the team with 11.
  • Went 4 for 4 with two home runs, three RBIs and three runs scored against the Yankees on Aug. 2 in his best game of the season.
  • Recorded a .316 average in the month of September.
Player Outlook:

It is hard to believe that Bogaerts already has eight years under his belt, but here we are.  After coming up in 2013 and helping the Red Sox make a magical World Series run, the X-Man has already put together quite the resume.  A three-time Silver Slugger, two-time All-Star and two-time World Series champion, Bogaerts enters the 2021 season as one of the veteran pieces on this Red Sox roster.

Look for Bogaerts to go for at least 150 hits and 25 home runs this season.  His power numbers have been on the rise since 2016 and he has typically been one of the more consistent bats in the Red Sox lineup, tallying over 190 hits three times in his career.  Flirting with that 200-hit mark once again would be ideal, but in a season where many will still be trying to find their footing after a 60-game 2020, chances are that numbers across the board are going to be slightly down.

Bogaerts has always been a solid option defensively, and with the addition of Kike Hernandez at second and the steady improvement of Devers at third, Boston's infield has the potential to be one of the best in the American League.

After a disappointing season, look for Bogaerts to be one of the main contributors that brings Boston back to their old ways and potentially allows them to clinch a playoff berth.
