Like most Red Sox, Devers is looking to have a bounce back season in 2021 after a disappointing 2020.  Devers average dropped from .311 in 2019 to only .263 in 2020.  After the season it was revealed that Devers was dealing with a lingering ankle injury which hampered his productivity.

Back of the baseball card:

  • Position: Third baseman
  • Age: 24
  • Bats: Left / Throws: Right
  • Height: 6-0 / Weight: 240 lbs.
  • Nickname: Carita
  • How acquired: Signed with the Red Sox as an amateur free agent in 2013.
  • Contract status: Signed 1 yr/$4.58 M deal - Under team control/arbitration eligible through 2024

  • September 8th at Philadelphia – In the first game of a doubleheader (seven inning games), went 3 for 4 with two homers, three RBI and two runs scored in a 6-5 loss to the Phillies.

Red Sox Podcast to be Named Player Outlook:

It’s sometimes easy to forget that after three full seasons in the major leagues Devers is still only 24 years old, younger than some highly touted prospects.  Devers is arguably the best pure hitter on the team and has tons of raw power.  He can sometimes get into deep funks, but almost as quickly as he gets into them, he seems to bust out.

Defensively he is an adventure, and most of his errors seem to come on the routine play where lapses of concentration lead to poor footwork and errant throws.  There is concern for his weight as he gets older, and there is the chance he could eventually move across the diamond to first base.

After flourishing in the two spot in the batting order after being moved there in 2019, early indications are Devers will be moved to the fourth or fifth spot to provide protection for J.D. Martinez.  Increased flexibility in the Sox lineup after the signings of versatile veterans Marwin Gonzalez and Kik√© Hernadez should give Devers a chance to DH on occasion and give him a break in the field.
