Red Sox Podcast to be Named Player Outlook:

Versatilty is the buzz word of the 2020 Red Sox camp.  González is in the mix with fellow newcomer Kiké Hernandez to bounce around to various positions on a nightly basis.  In his career, González has played 292 games at shortstop (though only one game since 2018), 457 in the outfield, 226 at first base, 156 at third base, and 133 at second base.

As a switch hitter he provides even more options in Manager Alex Cora’s tool kit, enabling the flexibility to spell either the left-handed hitting Franchy Cordeiro or the right-handed hitting Hunter Renfroe in the outfield, or platoon with right-handed hitting Bobby Dalbec at first base.  He may also see some time at DH should J.D. Martinez need a day off.

What the Red Sox need most from González is to return to form at the plate.  He is likely to slot either sixth or seventh in the lineup most nights, behind the thumpers like Martinez and Rafael Devers and ahead of Christian Vazquez, Cordeiro or Dalbec.  Versatility is a nice asset to have for a utility player like Brock Holt, but if the Sox expect González to be more of a super-sub like Ben Zobrist, he will need to significantly improve over the .211 season he had in 2020.
