Boston Red Sox: The Fans Voted That Bobby Dalbec Will Win the AL Rookie of the Year, He'll Face Competition to Actually Win It

Red Sox first baseman Bobby Dalbec is a Rookie of the Year favorite.

This weekend, the fans of Major League Baseball cast their votes for who they think will be the American League Rookie of the Year.  MLB on Fox held a poll and Red Sox first baseman Bobby Dalbec was their choice for Rookie of the Year.

Dalbec made his professional debut last season and impressed right away with his power.  The 6-foot-4 slugger mashed eight home runs in just 23 games which ended up being third most on the team.  He set the Red Sox record for most HR, six, in a player’s first 10 ML games.  He joined  AL Rookie of the Year, Kyle Lewis as the only players ever to homer in as many as 6 of their first 10 ML games.

Dalbec has been solid this spring seizing the opportunity to become the everyday first baseman this season. According to Ian Browne of, the team has been impressed with the young infielder’s poise and work ethic.

He has done nothing short of rake at the plate, he has crushed two grand slams and has seven home runs this spring. Heading into the season, Dalbec is expected to hit ninth in the batting order. Manager Alex Cora has decided to add some pop from the bottom of his line up with this decision.

Dalbec is projected to crush 36 home runs according to the Bill James Handbook, and 28 by Baseball Prospectus. The Red Sox are hoping for consistency from the rookie and having his power bat at the bottom might be dangerous.

While Red Sox fans are hoping Dalbec wins the AL ROY, he will face some stiff competition for the title. Rays Randy Arozarena will enter this season as a true rookie. Last season, he only played in 23 games, so he still qualifies as a rookie. Arozarena displayed his raw power during the World Series against the Dodgers. During the Fall Classic, he went 8-for-22 with three home runs and mashed 10 home runs during the postseason.

Arozarena will be must see television when he steps to the plate this season. Fans of baseball and the Rays were mesmerized by the 26-year-old outfielder. With only 99 career plate appearances under his belt, he is the current odds favorite to win the AL ROY according to

The last Red Sox player to win the AL ROY was Dustin Pedroia. He recently retired at the beginning of February after spending 14 years in Boston. Pedroia would go on to have a storied career with the Red Sox winning three World Series championships.

Dalbec comes into this season with some hype around him because of his bat and the moonshots he hit last year and this spring. The Red Sox will hope he materializes into a future slugger for years to come. He will be a strong candidate for Rookie of the Year, but will face some stiff competition from the likes of Arozarena and others this season.
