LeBron James & the Boston Red Sox

Earlier this week, LeBron James became part owner of the Boston Red Sox.  Yes, the lead in the upcoming film Space Jam 2 owns a piece of the franchise most dear to my heart.  James is not alone in gaining equity in Fenway Sports Group.  He and his longtime business partner, Maverick Carter, are taking the leap into sports ownership.

It is not a shocker that LeBron is doing big business with the Red Sox owners.  He has had a strong business relationship with FSG since 2011 when Carter brokered a marketing deal in exchange for small ownership stake in Fenway Sports Group’s English soccer mega franchise Liverpool.

So, as a Red Sox fan, how do I feel about LeBron James and Maverick Carter having equity in the Boston Red Sox franchise?  Two words…
Love. It.
LeBron James is one of the most influential athletes on planet Earth.  It has yet to be revealed as to how much stake James and Carter will own.  But they have the ability to bring new eyes to the Sox and the sport as a whole.  James’ merchandise is being worn by millions worldwide.  I do not care that he is a Yankees fan or that he rooted for the Dodgers.  Now that he has ownership stake in the Red Sox, whenever he decides to rock baseball gear it will don a Boston B.
After gaining 2% equity in Liverpool, James released a sneaker that was inspired by the soccer club.  A similar product could be coming down the pipeline and that will be seen by billions of people.  James is considered cool and that will make the Boston Red Sox cool by association.  I am all for that.

The entire sport of baseball can benefit from LeBron James’s presence.  His investment is proof that he believes in the future of baseball and how he can positively affect it.  Whether you are a fan of James or not, you cannot deny his ability to do good business.  The man is as successful as a human being can be.  Having that mentality in the game of baseball is fantastic.  I am a fan of the game of baseball, so this is very exciting to me.
I know it can be a hard pill to swallow.  For a very long time, Boston sports fans have actively rooted against LeBron James.  I mean, he has cheered for the hated rivals.  That is a big no-no in Red Sox Nation.  James has been the nemesis of the Celtics for his entire career.  Culminating with the superstar winning a championship for the rival Lakers.
However, when you remove the basketball aspect of James (and probably Space Jam 2) LeBron is a stand-up guy.  He is a husband, father, and wildly successful at everything (again exclude Space Jam 2).  James has essentially stayed clear of any controversies and is someone your kids can look up to.
I really hope LeBron brings that influence and mojo to the Red Sox.  As much as I have disliked much of the basketball chapters of the LeBron James journey, maybe the baseball ownership chapters will be more my preference.
