New England Patriots: Lawrence Guy Is An Important Defensive Player To Re-Sign This Week

The Patriots have some key defensive lineman who will test free agency this week.  Coming off a disappointing 2020 season, this offseason is extremely important for Head Coach Bill Belichick.  One key free agent for the Patriots is defensive tackle Lawrence Guy.

The 31-year-old signed with the Patriots back in 2017 to a four-year, $14.4 million contract.  He has been one of the core defensive players for New England and has earned a Super Bowl ring during his tenure.

Guy had an impressive season last year, playing in 14 of 16 games.  He missed two games due to a shoulder injury.  He was named a team captain for the first time in his NFL career while making 51 tackles and had 18 quarterback pressures.

There will be a list of suitors for Guy once free agency opens on St. Patrick’s Day.  Teams needing to beef up the interior defensive line will certainly look at Guy.  Since coming to New England, he has been solid against the pass and run but is now on the other side of 30.

One team to keep that could make a huge play for Guy this week could be the Miami Dolphins.  Last spring the Dolphins plucked some players from Foxboro in linebackers Kyle Van Noy and Elandon Roberts and center Ted Karras.  The three players joined new Dolphins Head Coach Brian Flores in South Beach.

As the Dolphins head into this week they have moved on from Van Noy, and Roberts and Karras are both free agents.  Van Noy was due to earn $12.5 million in non-guaranteed money.  Miami felt they could allocate those funds elsewhere despite a decent year from the veteran linebacker.  He had 69 tackles, six sacks, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries in 14 games.

The division rival will be a major player for Guy, according to Barry Jackson of The Miami Herald.  He reportedly has always been a favorite of the Dolphins, and linking him back up with Flores would be appealing to the Dolphins.

Pro Football Focus projects Guy to earn around $7 million in 2021.  The PFF breakdown went on to say about Guy, “the classic run-stuffing defensive tackle that teams can plug and play and then scheme pressures around him.  He’d still bring value to a lot of teams, and it wouldn’t be surprising at all to see an uptick in snap-to-snap efficiency with a slightly reduced role after being asked to do a lot in New England the last few years.”

If that is indeed his potential salary, expect Belichick to allow him to walk and replace Guy in free agency.  The Patriots want to bring back Guy and, despite his age, he is a priority for the team.  If the Patriots lose him they should turn their attention to both Adam Butler and Deatrich Wise Jr., who are both free agents.

There are some options on the market with whom the Patriots could replace Guy, Butler or Wise Jr. if he decides to move on from the Patriots.  One name to watch is Colts free defensive end Al-Quadin Muhammad.  The former sixth-round pick of the Saints back in 2017 was a key depth piece for the Colts defensive front.  The 6-foot-4, 250 pound edge rusher would be a viable option for the Patriots front seven.

He had 23 tackles in 2020, two for a loss, two sacks, six quarterback hits and a forced fumble.  Muhammad also played in all 16 games for the Colts last season.  While he is not a true interior piece, he can swing to the outside to replace Wise if he opts to leave in free agency.

The 25-year-old defensive end is extremely coachable according to his defensive line coach Brian Baker.  His coachability and ability to play the edge could be a viable option.

Another name that could be an impact player and replace Guy is Giants nose tackle Dalvin Tomlinson.  The Giants free agent has said he wants to be a Giant for life. During his time in New York, Tomlinson has been a durable player and a leader on the Giants defense.  He was the Giants nominee for the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award.

He is a sneaky run-stuffing tackle and pass rusher.  Tomlinson has played in all 64 games of his NFL career.  If he comes to New England, he will cost a hefty price tag.  If a team reaches and offers him an aggressive contract around $13-15m a season, expect Belichick to politely bow out.  If the big free agent money comes off gets thrown around and he is still sitting there by day two, the Patriots could swoop in.

There will be some turnover on this roster for next season and that isn’t a bad thing.  The Patriots want to keep Guy and his leadership in Foxboro, but they shouldn’t reach to do so.  According to, they like him back on a two-year, $8 million pact.  This would be the best overall outcome for the Patriots, but Guy will cash in elsewhere this week.  If it isn’t Miami the Tampa Bay Buccaneers could make a phone call for the veteran interior defensive lineman.
