Patriots Free Agent Target: Tight End Gerald Everett

The Patriots lack of production from the tight end position did not go unnoticed last season.  The team got 18 receptions from three separate players total from the tight end position in 2020.

The de facto starter, Ryan Izzo, caught 13 passes for 199 yards.  Bill Belichick spent two third-round picks on both Devin Asiasi and Dalton Keene.  Asiasi caught two passes for 39 yards and hauled in one touchdown.  Keene had three catches for 16 yards.

They earned zero production from the position.  A position which was previously held down by Rob Gronkowski, who is about to be three years removed from playing in New England.

Since Gronkowski’s departure in New England, five players have tried to fill the void.  Izzo, Asiasi, Keene, Benjamin Watson and Matt LaCosse have given no offensive support to the position.

Belichick must address the tight end position this offseason and bring in someone who can make plays. Coming into this offseason, the Patriots have Izzo, Keene, Asiasi, LaCosse and converted linebacker to tight end Rashod Berry under contract.

LaCosse missed all of last season after he opted-out due to the COVID-19 pandemic.  The Patriots could retain him, but it’s likely he’ll be waived making room for a better replacement.

The former Broncos tight end was productive during his time in Denver.  Since coming to New England, he’s been the opposite and injuries have gotten the best of him.

As free agency looms on the horizon, the Patriots will need to look there for upgrades.  One tight end option that will be intriguing on the market will be Rams Gerald Everett.

The 26-year-old could have the opportunity to bring his offensive upside to Foxboro.  Last season, he had 41 catches for 417 yards as the backup to Tyler Higbee.

Everett has been in the league since 2017, and over his career has 127 catches for 1,389 yards and eight touchdowns.  He benefited from an offensive minded coach in Sean McVay and quarterback Jared Goff.

The former second-round pick would bring athleticism to the position.  Prior to Everett being drafted in 2017, he was looked at as someone who could turn into an elite pass catcher.  With the Patriots, he will have to work on his drops in the passing game.  He had seven drops out of 62 targets last season.  Everett was ranked one of the worst at his position in that category.

If Everett comes to New England, his current quarterback options are Jarrett Stidham and Brian Hoyer.  Cam Newton could return to the team and might benefit from having a legitimate tight end in the passing game.

Sportrac predicts Everett will land a salary of $6.6 to $7.3 million per season on the open market.  The Patriots have roughly $63 million in cap space this offseason and may get more if they cut additional players.

Belichick will have option to upgrade his tight end group this offseason.  Everett is just one of the few names he could turn to and improve his anemic position.  Florida’s Kyle Pitts is an option in the draft, and Jared Cook and Hunter Henry will also be viable options.

The one flaw and drawback is free agents currently don’t know who the Patriots quarterback will be.  As these players decide on their future, money and the quarterback are two legitimate needs for players as they make their decisions.
