Patriots to Re-Sign Cam Newton, Up to $14 Million Incentive Based Deal

Cam Newton is back.  The New England Patriots will re-sign their quarterback to a one-year deal.  Reportedly the deal is worth up to $14 million for the upcoming season, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter.  Newton's base salary will be $8 million, with $6 million in honors, per Mike Reiss of ESPN.

At first glance, the $14 million price tag might anger some Patriots fans who were hoping for a different option under center this season.  However, the $14 million price tag is incentive laden, which will allow New England to be involved in the quarterback market.

The Patriots are coming off a disappointing 7-9 season while their former quarterback Tom Brady enjoyed a Super Bowl championship.  New England has the third most salary cap space heading into free agency.  Presumably, they will now add pieces for him on offense like wide receivers and tight ends.

Earlier in the week, the Patriots have already added a piece back to their offensive line.  The team will trade for tackle Trent Brown who will help bolster a young offensive line.  Unless the Patriots add another quarterback, they will be tasked with protecting Newton this season.

People around the league have been very supportive of the Newton deal.  Patriots running back Damien Harris took to Twitter and spoke highly of the Newton deal.

Newton returns to a Patriots' locker room that is excited to have him back.  Equally as important, Newton wanted to be back in New England.  Newton, who will turn 32 in May, was on the “I Am Athlete” podcast and said he was open to another one-year deal with the Patriots.

The veteran quarterback will now return to the Patriots and will now have one full year of the playbook under his belt.  Last season, Newton threw for 2,657 yards, had eight passing touchdowns, ten interceptions, and 12 rushing touchdowns.

The Patriots will need to surround Newton with weapons this season if they have any hope of contending in the AFC.  Newton was effective on his feet, rushing for 592 yards on 137 attempts.  His new offensive line should allow him to create more opportunities and hopefully Belichick adds weapons.

New England now has a quarterback in place to help lure free agents too Foxboro.  In addition, Newton could be a potential trade chip if the Patriots find a new quarterback.  The Washington Football Team has expressed interest in Newton.

The Newton signing doesn’t take the Patriots out of the running for another quarterback.  Belichick at minimum has a quarterback he can sell to free agents next week as he tries to improve his football team.
