Boston Bruins: Tuukka Rask is Set to Return to the Net on Thursday, Jeremy Swayman’s Potential Role Moving Forward

The Bruins are going to get goaltender Tuukka Rask back after he missed 17 of the team’s 18 games due to an injury.  Rask last played on March 7, where he left that game with an upper-body injury.

Bruins coach Bruce Cassidy was asked whether Rask would be ready to play on Thursday night.  "Should be ready, assuming there's no setbacks from today, which I have heard there is none, so he should be ready to go, yes," said Cassidy.

Prior to getting hurt, Rask started 15 games and posted a 8-4-2 record.  He also had a 90.7 save percentage and a 2.40 goals against average.

While Rask has been on the shelf, the Bruins have been playing both Jeremy Swayman and Dan Vladar between the pipes.

Swayman has been brilliant since getting called up from Providence.  He has a 3-1-0 record, 2.22 goals against average and .926 save percentage.

The 23-year-old should figure into the Bruins plans as the team makes a playoff push.

“To answer the Swayman question, he certainly looks composed,” said Cassidy.  “Tuesday night was another game where he stopped the ones he was supposed to, and he made a few extra saves to give his team a chance to win.  Keep in mind that we don’t have a crystal ball for what’s going to happen in three weeks.”

Swayman will be the team’s back up for now until Jaroslav Halak returns from the COVID protocol list.  He said that merit and which backstop gives the Bruins the best chance to win will play and suit up.

"Obviously, knowing that Swayman and Vladdy have been good for us, given us a chance to win," said Cassidy.

The rookie goalie is coming off a win over the Buffalo Sabres on Tuesday night.  The game was the debut for Taylor Hall, Curtis Lazar and Mike Reilly.  All three players came over in trades leading up to the NHL Trade Deadline on Monday.

The Bruins and the Sabres went to a shootout in their last match-up where Swayman was a brick wall.  He didn’t allow a goal during the shootout securing the win and the much needed two points for the Bruins.
