Boston Red Sox: Ace Lefty Eduardo Rodriguez Improves to 4-0, Earns Series Split with the Mariners

The Red Sox have salvaged a series split with the Seattle Mariners on Sunday.  Boston defeated the Mariners 5-3, and lefty Eduardo Rodriguez earned his fourth win of the season.

Rodriguez struck out eight Seattle batters over the course of seven innings.  He has been the team’s ace this season, improving to 4-0 with 26 strikeouts, two walks and a 3.52 ERA.

The 28-year-old Rodriguez has been the team’s de facto ace while Chris Sale is out rehabbing from Tommy John surgery.  After missing last season due to complications from COVID-19, Rodriguez has been impressive this season.

The Mariners were only able to manage six hits off Rodriguez on Sunday.  He threw 98 pitches, 71 of them were thrown for strikes.

Rodriguez opened the game by giving up back-to-back doubles to the designated hitter Mitch Haniger and Ty France.  In the fifth inning, the Mariners picked up two runs off doubles from Tom Murphy and J.P. Crawford.  Despite the six hits given up, Rodriguez was in command through the entire game.

Red Sox Manager Alex Cora needed his ace to be a stopper following Saturday’s loss to the Mariners.  “We needed that one.  We needed an outing like that,” said Cora. “

“He's so precise.  His changeup always plays.  The fastball up always plays.  That's what aces do.  They put their teams on their backs and they carry them to a W,” said Cora.

With the win for Rodriguez on Sunday, it was his longest start since the season finale back in 2019.  According to the Twitter handle Red Sox Notes, dating back to 2017, Boston is 38-2 when the offense gives Rodriguez at least four runs of support in his starts.  The Red Sox offense gave him four runs in the first inning after falling 1-0.

The win Sunday afternoon salvaged a 5-5 home stand record for Boston.  The Red Sox are now 8-8 at Fenway Park this season and will begin a road trip against the Mets and Rangers.  Boston is now 14-9 this season and will look to expand on their AL East lead this coming week.
