Boston Red Sox: Alex Verdugo Makes Game Saving Catch Reminiscent of Andrew Benintendi in ’18 ALCS

When the Red Sox traded Andrew Benintendi to the Royals prior to Spring Training, fans paid homage to the left fielder on social media.  Fans would post the video of Benintendi robbing Houston Astros Alex Bregman with a diving catch to end Game 4 of the ALCS.

On Wednesday afternoon, Alex Verdugo would make a catch to end the game in left field that was reminiscent of Benintendi’s catch in 2018.  Verdugo’s catch secured the win for the Red Sox which at the time was Boston’s eight in a row.

Following the game, MassLive’s Chris Cotillo asked Red Sox Manager Alex Cora if the catch reminded him of Benintendi.  Of course,” said Cora, “That was a great play by Alex.”

Verdugo was the starting center fielder to begin the first game of the double header.  Cora would move Verdugo to left field when he had Kiké Hernandez pinch-hit for Franchy Cordero in the sixth inning.

The 24-year-old outfielder has been extremely versatile for Cora by being able to play all outfield positions.

After the game, when asked about the catch, Verdugo would say, “It’s actually weird because it’s one of the plays that you think about right before it happens.  It just so happens that it was exactly what I thought about because I knew the hitter.  I knew that he’s been hitting line drives that way and likes to go oppo"

He added, "Any game we get a W and clinch one and don’t have to go into extras or waste any more arms is a huge day."

In addition to the game clinching catch, Verdugo had two RBIs and a run. His performance today prompted one of his favorite players growing up as a kid David Ortiz to take notice.

“Have a day Verdugo .. see u kid,” Ortiz tweeted.
