Boston Red Sox: Alex Verdugo Takes Time with Fans Following Game in Minnesota Going Over His Approach at the Plate

The Red Sox have been on a ridiculous hot start to begin the season.  This past week, Boston took three-of-four games from the Minnesota Twins.  Despite the Red Sox seeing their nine game winning streak come to an end, one player was as star in the series.

Alex Verdugo was a hero in the double-header on Wednesday with his game winning catch.  During the loss in the final game of the season, Verdugo had an impressive at-bat against Taylor Rogers.  With the bases loaded, Verdugo ripped a line drive down the left-field line scoring three runs.  The big hit tied the game but ultimately the bullpen wasn’t able to keep the Twins at bay.

Following one of the games in Minnesota, Verdugo took time to interact with some of the fans.  In a 56 second video originally found on Facebook, Verdugo goes over his approach at the plate for some fans.  In the video, one fan talks about doing a toe tap at the plate, Verdugo comments “if a pitcher quick pitches me, I’m already loaded”.  He then mimics the toe tap at the plate.

Verdugo taking the time with fans following the game is not something seen from players outside Spring Training.  Even though the interaction on video was broken up by ballpark security, the time Verdugo spent is a feel good moment for baseball.  The video has gone viral on social media with extremely positive reviews.

The 24-year-old outfielder started the season 0-for-11, but since the start he has been tearing the cover off the ball.  Verdugo is now hitting .271 with two home runs and 11 RBI’s on the young season.

Verdugo is quickly becoming a fan favorite in Boston with his style of play and the energy he brings to the field.  “For me, I’ve always been a very emotional player so, you know, whether it’s good or bad I like to show some emotions,” Verdugo said.  “I just naturally get fired up and I like to look in the dugout and see the boys riled up and fired up as well. I think we’re kind of constantly feeding off energy with all of us.”
