Boston Red Sox: Alex Verdugo With Three Hits, Makes a Sensational Throw for His League Leading Third Outfield Assist

Whatever outfield position Red Sox manager Alex Cora pencils in Alex Verdugo, he has produced.  This season Verdugo has made some sensational plays from left field both at home and on the road.

Last night, the 24-year-old Verdugo made an amazing throw from left field to gun down Kyle Seager going from first to third base.

In the top of the fifth inning, Boston was leading 3-2 when Evan White of the Mariners came to the plate.  White would hit the ball off the Green Monster, and typically an outfielder would throw the ball to second to cut down that runner.

Instead, Verdugo threw a laser to third cutting down Seager.

“He had the play right in front of him,” Cora said.  “Sometimes runners take that for granted.  It wasn’t a close play at third base.  So he saw it.  He trusts his arm.  He’s very accurate and he got him out.”

The throw to cut down Seager was Verdugo’s league leading third outfield assist of the season.  The energetic outfielder almost had a second assist in the game as well.

Mitch Haniger led off the game with a double.  Verdugo threw the ball into second, but unfortunately Christian Arroyo dropped the throw from Verdugo trying to cut down Haniger.

“The first play of the game he put the ball on the money at second base.  Christian, he just didn’t catch the ball,” Cora said.

“But that second throw was amazing because probably he was feeling, ‘Let me go to second.’  But he had the presence of mind where he turned, he saw Seager right there and he put it right on the money.”

Verdugo has been flashing his glove and defense quite a bit this season.  Last week, he made a diving game winning catch against the Twins.

In addition to the stellar defense, Verdugo collected three more hits.  He’s now hitting .316 with three home runs this season.  Over his last seven games, Verdugo has posted a ridiculous .440/.462/.640 slash line out of the two-hole.

“Every day, it’s a blessing to have your name penciled in that lineup.  I come out here to give it my all no matter what position, no matter where I’m at in the lineup,” said Verdugo.

“We like Alex, the way he is playing,” Cora added.  “The fact that he can play all over the place and be really good, that’s a plus for us.”

The Red Sox will look to make it two in a row against the Mariners this afternoon.  Boston won game two of the series last night 6-5, the third game of the series starts at 1:10 pm on NESN.
