Boston Red Sox: Struggling Bobby Dalbec Tied the Game in the Ninth in the Win Last Night, ‘As soon as I hit it I was just flying. Flying for me’

The Boston Red Sox are red hot and have won five in a row.  After being swept by the Orioles last weekend, Boston has looked like a completely different team.  One player still trying to find his rhythm at the plate is Bobby Dalbec.

The 25-year-old first baseman opened the season 0-for-10.  During that span he struck out five times and looked lost at the plate.  Manager Alex Cora gave Dalbec two straight days off prior to the final game against the Rays.

After working with designated hitter J.D. Martinez on his mechanics, he has still struggled at the plate.  Since the Red Sox 9-2 win over the Rays on Wednesday, Dalbec has gone 2-for-8.  He entered Saturday night's game looking to get going and went 0-for-3, but had the game tying RBI in the top of the ninth in the win over the O’s.

The Red Sox fell behind in the eight inning 4-3, but the hometown nine did not waste anytime trying to get that lead back.

Boston would get one-out singles from Marwin Gonzalez and Franchy Cordero off O’s reliever Cesar Valdez.  The hits put runners on the corners for the struggling Dalbec.

Ideally, the Red Sox needed a sacrifice fly from Dalbec to tie the game.  Instead, he grounded to third in what should have been an inning ending double play.  The rookie slugger hustled down the line and broke up the double play and the Red Sox would tie the game at four.

Dalbec, who was flying down the first base line reached safely and Gonzalez scored.  Following the game, Dalbec was asked about the play, “As soon as I hit it I was just flying.  Flying for me.”

Boston would score an additional two runs and would go on to win the game 6-4.  Even though Dalbec will head into Sunday’s game with an .095 average, he has something to build off of with that broken up double play.  The Red Sox look to sweep the Orioles on Sunday afternoon when Nick Pivetta looks to improve his record to 2-0 and Boston tries to make it six in a row.
