Boston Red Sox: Eduardo Rodriguez Makes His First Start Against the Orioles, Tanner Houck to "Work On His Craft" in Worcester

Eduardo Rodriguez will make his first start since 2019 today in Baltimore as the Red Sox look to make it four in a row.  Rodriguez was activated off the injured list after dealing with a “dead arm”.

Manager Alex Cora said that Rodriguez will not have a firm pitch limit during today’s start, but they don’t plan to push him against the Orioles.

“He’s good to go,” Cora said.  “Obviously, we’ve got to be careful, but he pitched on Friday (alternate site), he threw a bullpen, so he’s good to go.”

Over four spring starts, Rodriguez posted an 2.63 ERA and was initially named the Opening Day starter by Cora.  Once the “dead arm” issue landed him on the injured list, Nathan Eovaldi took his spot in the rotation.

“It was hard for me because I wanted to really go out there for the first game of the season,” Rodriguez said.  “I don’t want to miss any starts so that’s the way I like to be, to go out there every five days from the beginning all the way until the end.”

With Rodriguez making his start this afternoon at 3:05 p.m. from Camden Yards, the Red Sox optioned Tanner Houck to Worcester.  The decision to option Houck to Triple-A has not sat well with Red Sox fans.  Since he was called up last season, Houck has been incredibly impressive on the mound.

Houck has made five appearances over his young big league career, while making four starts.  He is 3-1 with a 1.17 ERA over 23 innings pitched.  The 24-year-old pitched an inning of relief against Tampa Bay this past series.

The Red Sox want Houck to focus on “his craft” while in Worcester.  "Keep working at his craft, keep throwing strikes, keep developing his secondary pitches and just be ready.  That's all he needs to do,” said Cora.

Boston is coming off a clean sweep of the American League champions and will now head to Baltimore.  The Red Sox will look to avenge the Opening Series sweep at the hands of the Orioles.
