Boston Red Sox: Garrett Richards Fails to Impress in his Debut, Orioles Sweep Opening Series

The Orioles came into Fenway Park and punched the Red Sox directly in the mouth.  Garrett Richards took the mound at home for his team debut looking to end the two game losing streak.  Instead, Richards was only able to last two-plus innings, giving up seven hits and surrendering six earned runs while only striking out two.

Boston would go on to lose the third game of the series 11-3.  This is the first 0-3 start since the Bobby Valentine managed Red Sox.  That season ended in disaster back in 2012, but there is still plenty of time for Boston to turn this season around.

Richards struggled out of the gate in this game as Orioles Cedric Mullins jumped on a fastball from Richards and hit a double.  Outfielder Anthony Santander would then single to left to score Mullins.  Then new Orioles third baseman Makiel Franco doubled to left, scoring Santander and Trey Mancini, who reached prior to the at bat.  After the first inning the Orioles took a 3-0 lead and never looked back.

As the game would go on, Richards would get progressively worse despite not giving up a run in the second inning.  The Orioles threw a crooked number on the board in the third inning with seven runs off Richards and his replacement Josh Taylor.

The 6-foot-5 left-hander would throw 29 pitches in less than a inning of work and was slapped around by Baltimore.  Taylor was charged with four earned runs while striking out two and walking one.

Garrett Whitlock came in relief of both Richards and Taylor and was one of the few bright spots on this Easter Sunday.

The former New York Yankees prospect who was selected in the Rule 5 draft pitched 3 1/2 scoreless innings. Whitlock was absolutely terrific on the mound only allowing three hits, striking out five and not walking a runner.

“It was an honor to be wearing the Red Sox name and giving me a chance,” said Whitlock in the post game press conference.  “I mean, first off, it was an honor to be out there and be with those guys to be out there.  Adrenaline was rushing and a ton of fun.”

Whitlock was just trying to get outs and he did to stop the bleeding in this dreadful game.

The other bright spot in this blow out loss is J.D. Martinez and the hot bat he's swinging.  To begin this young season, Martinez is 6-for-12 with a home run, three doubles, two runs and three RBIs.  He blasted a massive 429-foot dinger in the fourth inning to bring the Orioles lead down to eight.

The Red Sox have gotten nothing from their offense outside Martinez. Xander Bogaerts is 1-for-12, Alex Verdugo is 0-for-11, Kiké Hernández is 1-for-10, Bobby Dalbec is 0-for-10 and Hunter Renfroe is 0-for-7.

Boston will look to get their first win of the 2021 season when they play host to the American League champion Tampa Bay Rays on Monday.
