Boston Red Sox: Garrett Richards Struggles Again, Alex Cora Has No Plans to Skip Him in the Rotation, Splits Two-Game Series with Toronto

Garrett Richards threw 92 pitches on Wednesday night and walked six Blue Jays batters.  The Jays would score four earned runs off Richards, who only lasted 4 ⅔ innings as the Red Sox lost to Toronto, 6-3.

Richards struggled with his command from the beginning of the game.  He walked Cavan Biggio and then hit Bo Bichette with a pitch.  Vladimir Guerrero got the scoring started for Toronto driving in Biggio with an RBI single.

The second inning didn’t treat Richards nicely as the Jays torched Richards for three more runs.  Lourdes Gurriel Jr. brought in a run on a sacrifice fly while Biggio and Bichette drove in the other two runs.

Through four starts this season, the right-handers owns a 6.48 ERA.  The inconsistency from Richards had the media asking Manager Alex Cora if he’ll skip the righty in the rotation.

Cora said there is no plan to skip or drop Richards in the rotation.  He would add, “I think he was erratic today. Overall, his three outings, this was the most erratic one.”

The Red Sox skipper said that Richards needs to find his slider.  “He can work on it in between starts.  He's an established big leaguer with a track record.  We have to find that pitch,” added Cora after the game.

Following the game, Richards said that he wasn’t able to find his release point.  “Just kind of fighting my delivery, my release point, the elements, a whole lot of stuff.  Didn't have a whole lot going tonight.  Obviously not good,” said Richards.

The 32-year-old starter said that he is having a tough time finding the feel for his breaking balls.  “In a way I kind of feel like my curveball is taking a little bit of feel away from my slider.”

“It's not something that I'm super-concerned with.  Obviously I want to do better and pitch better.  It's a constant grind.  I just think the delivery was off.  I was kind of fighting it the whole night,” added Richards.

The Red Sox will welcome the Seattle Mariners to Fenway Park on Thursday.  The two clubs own the two best records in the American League to start the young season.  Boston will feature Nick Pivetta on the mound, the Mariners will counter with Justin Dunn. First pitch will be at 7:10 and can be seen on NESN.
