Boston Red Sox: Garrett Whitlock Quickly Emerging as a Rookie of the Year Candidate

The Red Sox came into Monday losers of two straight to the White Sox.  Boston dropped the doubleheader on Saturday needing to salvage a series split on Patriots Day.

The offense came out firing for 11 runs on 17 hits.  Kiké Hernández, Alex Verdugo and J.D. Martinez all hit home runs as the Red Sox got back on track.

Nathan Eovaldi started the game and was impressive once again.  The right-hander went 6 ⅓ innings surrendering nine hits, giving up four runs and striking out ten batters.

Boston would turn to rookie Garrett Whitlock in the bullpen.  The right-hander went 2 ⅔ scoreless innings, striking out two.

Whitlock continued his dominance out of the bullpen.  Coming into Monday’s game, he has thrown 6 ⅓ scoreless innings over three outings for the Red Sox this season.

The Red Sox are working on stretching out Whitlock’s arm more.  There is no conversation as to using him as a spot starter yet this season.  Manager Alex Cora would comment on that by saying, “We haven’t talked about that.  Actually it hasn’t been a topic for our group.”

As Whitlock continues to return from Tommy John surgery, he has looked like an American League Rookie of the Year candidate.

Following today’s appearance, Whitlock has now gone nine innings surrendering three hits while posting a 0.00 ERA.

He made reigning American League MVP Jose Abreu look foolish following a strikeout in the top of the eighth.

Whitlock has looked fantastic for Boston this season.  The Red Sox are now have an American League leading 11 wins.

Boston will welcome the Blue Jays to Fenway Park tomorrow afternoon.
