Boston Red Sox: Josh Taylor Scuffles Out of the Bullpen, ERA Balloons to 10.80, Internal Options to Replace Him?

The Red Sox were going into the the top of the ninth only down by a run.  In the bottom of the eighth, shortstop Xander Bogaerts hit a solo home run into the Green Monster bringing Boston within a run of the Blue Jays, 4-3.

Manager Alex Cora called upon lefty Josh Taylor in the bullpen to keep the game close.  Unfortunately, Taylor was not able to and gave up two runs. He would allow Bo Bichette and Vladimir Guerrero to get on baseball.  Pinch hitter Alejandro Kirk singled to right bringing home Bichette.

Randal Grichuk would plate another Blue Jays run scoring Guerrero after outfielder singled to right center field.  The two runs would prove to be costly as the Red Sox were unable to comeback from three runs down in the bottom of the ninth.

The Red Sox have two lefties on their roster in Taylor and Darwinzon Hernandez, but Taylor hasn’t looked great on the mound all season.

The lefty was great in 2019, pitching in 52 games going 2-2 with a 3.04 ERA.  Since then, in 15 games over the course of two seasons, he has an ERA over nine.

If Chaim Bloom decides that Boston needs to make a move with Taylor, he could turn to a few players within the system.  Prior to the start of the season, the Red Sox signed left-hander Tyler Olson to a minor-league deal.  Olsen, 31, has made 124 career major-league appearances.  He has spent time with the Marines, Yankees and Indians over his five years in the big leagues.

Boston has both Matt Hall and Stephen Gonsalves in Worcester as left-handed options.  Both players would need to be added to the 40-man roster to facilitate the move to Boston.  The Red Sox could add right-handers Kevin McCarthy and minor-league free agent Hector Rondón.

Rondón struggled this spring prior to joining the Red Sox, allowing seven earned runs in seven innings with a 7.71 ERA, while striking out eight batters.
