Boston Red Sox: Nick Pivetta Outduels Jacob deGrom, Grateful for the Team Believing in Him

When Chaim Bloom came to Boston, he always had his eyes on Nick Pivetta.  He had his opportunity to acquire the right-hander prior to the trade deadline last season.

The trade is paying off dividends for the Red Sox.  Pivetta has been electric in his short time with the club.  He earned his third win of the season, out dueling Mets ace Jacob deGrom.

On paper, the Pivetta-deGrom pitching matchup seemed one-sided.  deGrom, who entered with a 0.31 ERA in four starts so far this year, has been nails on the mound.

However, despite his amazing start, games are not played on paper, but on the baseball diamond.

Boston completed a two-game sweep of the Mets at Citi Field with a 1-0 victory, Wednesday night.

The Red Sox only run came off the bat of Christian Vazquez in the second inning.

Following a double by Xander Bogaerts, Vazquez hit a double to bring home the shortstop.  His seventh RBI of the season would prove to be all the scoring the Red Sox would need.

Pivetta came into the game with a 2-0 record and was facing the games best starter.  To get himself in the right mindset, Pivetta told himself he was “as good as Jacob deGrom”.

“I think I’m just as good as deGrom,” Pivetta said.  “The way that I go into it is I mentally have to put myself in, ‘I’m as good as deGrom and I’m going to beat deGrom.’  That’s just what you have to do.”

“He’s an incredible pitcher.  Don’t get me wrong.  I love watching him pitch and I think he’s incredible,” said Pivetta.

Pivetta was coming off his best outing of the year in his last start.  He took a no-hitter into the sixth against Seattle, which ultimately the Red Sox lost in extra innings.

The 27-year-old only allowed one hit over five scoreless innings against New York.  He would finish with seven strikeouts, three walks lowering his ERA to 2.81.

Pivetta felt he had good command of his fastball on Wednesday.  He felt he was able to get the fastball over for strikes resulting in getting batters out.

“I think I had better command of my fastball in my last game, but compared to this game, I was able to get the fastball over for strikes and beat them out with that,” said Pivetta postgame.

In his first full season in Boston, Pivetta is incredibly thankful for the organization.

“I’m comfortable here and I’m really happy here,” Pivetta said.  “Like I said before, the (Philadelphia) Phillies brought me up to the big leagues and got me started on this path and I’m really grateful for them for giving me the opportunity.  I’m grateful for the Boston Red Sox believing in me and being able to show them what I’m worth and what I can do for a team.

I’m really enjoying it here and I really love the guys,” said Pivetta.
