Nick Pivetta shined in his season debut against the Rays last week. The 28-year-old who struggled as a member of the Phillies, but he seems to have begun to figure it out with the Red Sox.  On Sunday, Pivetta took the mound for Boston looking for his second win of the season and his team’s sixth straight.

Pivetta went out on Sunday against the O’s and took care of business.  He went six innings, giving up seven hits, four earned runs and three walks while striking out seven batters.  The right-hander improved his record to 2-0 in the 14-9 victory over Baltimore.

The only true hiccup in his start on Sunday was the three-run home run he gave up to Maikel Franco in the sixth inning.

In the third inning, Pivetta made a nice play at the plate after he crossed up his catcher Christian Vazquez.  With two outs, O’s shortstop Freddy Galvis ran from home from third, Vazquez retrieved the ball quickly and tossed it to Pivetta, who tagged Galvis and completed the final out.

“I was running in really, really hard,” Pivetta said.  “When I heard the runner was coming from third, I just tried to get my body in front of the plate and beat him there.  And get my legs in front so I could kind of block the plate the best I could ... I believe the rule is if the ball takes you into the plate, you can block it.  So I just wanted to make sure that I got there, put myself in a good position.”

Pivetta will make his next start for the Red Sox on Friday when the White Sox come to Fenway Park.
