Boston Red Sox: The Nine Game Winning Streak is Over, Adam Ottavino Struggles, White Sox Coming to Fenway This Weekend

SHARE:

The Red Sox nine-game winning streak was fun while it lasted.  When the season started, the Red Sox were swept out of Fenway Park by the lowly Orioles.  The doom and gloom within the fanbase had begun to rear its ugly head.

Then Boston ripped off nine straight wins.  The team pitched very well, with some struggles.  The offense has been one of the hottest in baseball.

On Thursday, the winning streak finally came to an end when the Twins defeated the Red Sox 4-3. Reliever Adam Ottavino hasn’t looked good to start the season.  He would go on to give up the game winning hit to Max Kepler, which dropped Boston to 9-4 in the standings.

The 35-year-old Ottavino through five games is 1-1 with a 9.82 ERA in 3.2 innings of work.  He is slowly becoming a liability for the Red Sox bullpen in the early part of the season.

Due to Ottavino's struggles in games, Matt Barnes is now the clear closer.  Manager Alex Cora has not formally named Barnes the closer but the right-hander is being utilized in key high-leverage situations.  Whether Cora will say it or not, Barnes is the closer.

With the White Sox coming to Fenway this weekend, and despite his struggles, Ottavino will remain an important piece to the bullpen.

Ottavino came to Boston in a trade with prospect Frank German in exchange for cash.  The Yankees traded Ottavino to free up money and the Red Sox filled a void in their bullpen.

Last season, Ottavino finished with a 5.89 ERA in 24 appearances.  His ERA was atrocious due to one awful outing against the Blue Jays towards the end of the season.

Yankees blog sites and fans of Twitter have been rejoicing in Ottavino’s struggles in Boston.  The blog site, YanksGoYard wrote an article following Boston’s loss saying the Yankees won the Ottavino trade

Ottavino may have been on the receiving end of Kepler getting the game winning hit and the winning streak coming to an end.  However, even though Yankees fans think Boston looks terrible for the Ottavino trade, the move makes sense even to this day.

Through 13 games to the start of this young season, Boston is in first place and the Yankees are sitting in third place at 5-7.  It is still very early and Yankees fans are out for blood when it comes to Ottavino.

Boston will welcome another tough challenge when the White Sox roll into Fenway for a four game series.  This is a key matchup against one of the top teams in the American League.  The White Sox are coming off a huge high after Carlos Rodón threw a no hitter against the Indians a few nights ago.  The series starts tonight from Fenway, providing the weather cooperates.
