Boston Red Sox: Tanner Houck Was Dominant In His Start Against The Orioles

The Red Sox are coming off an Opening Day loss to the Orioles on Friday.  The offense was missing while Nathan Eovaldi was more than serviceable for 5.1 innings.

Tanner Houck made the start for the second game of the season. Over the first three innings, he was dominant.  Houck had his slider on full display as Red Sox fans watched him mow down The O’s lineup.

In the first inning, Houck faced Orioles outfielder Anthony Santander.  With one out and a runner on second, Houck unleashed his slider.  The sweeping slider was no match for one of the Orioles best hitters.

Over the first three innings, Houck’s slider was deceptively good.  Referring to his slider as deceptively good is a mere understatement unless you watched it on your own.

The fourth inning wasn’t what Houck was hoping for after three stellar innings.  He got into some trouble following an error by third baseman Rafael Devers.  The error led to two Orioles runs.  Houck would settle down and strikeout Freddy Galvis.  The right-hander struck out seven Orioles through four innings.

Houck’s final line was five innings pitched, six hits, three runs, two earned, while walking one and striking out eight.

Throughout his start, Red Sox fans and media took to social media comparing Houck to Chris Sale. Houck from the right side has a eerie similar delivery to Sale.  Rob Friedman, also known as the Pitching Ninja, released a video back in September of last year comparing Sale and Houck.

“It’s definitely cool,” Houck said about Friedman’s video.  “Whenever I was going through the draft process and people asked, ‘Who do you compare yourself to the most?,’ I always said, ‘right-handed Chris Sale.'  I knew that I landed across my body just like he does.  Both low three-quarter arm slots.  So a lot of similarities there.  But seeing it on video was completely different.  That was actually just kind of wild to see how similar it was."

Houck made a case for himself to remain on the big league roster after today’s performance.  Eduardo Rodriguez will make a rehab start for Worcester and is expected to rejoin the rotation after.
