Boston's Offense is Red Hot, Former Members of the Red Sox are Ice Cold

SHARE:

The Red Sox are red hot right now since being swept by the Orioles during the Opening Series of the season.  Following the first series of the season, Boston has won four straight games.

On Thursday, the Red Sox offense beat up on Orioles’ Matt Harvey for seven hits and scoring four runs.  The offense added three additional runs off the O’s bullpen leading up to the 7-3.

The offense was locked in on Thursday afternoon.  J.D. Martinez went 2-for-5 with an RBI double, Alex Verdugo went 2-for-5 with two doubles, and catcher Christian Vazquez went 3-for-5 with two doubles.

Rafael Devers and Kiké Hernández both hit home runs in the win.  Devers entered the game hitting only .105 on the young season.  He would hit a 452 foot home run off of Harvey giving the Red Sox a 2-0 lead.

Before the game, Manager Alex Cora commented on how Devers likes hitting at Oriole Park at Camden Yards.  “I know he likes hitting here, hopefully he can pop one out and then get rolling,” said Cora.

Devers has four career home runs at Oriole Park at Camden Yards.

“He has been hitting the ball hard,” Cora said.  “When he starts controlling the zone, good things happen.  That was a good swing.”

While the Red Sox are mashing at the plate, two former Red Sox hitters are struggling with their new teams.  After one week, both Andrew Benintendi and Jackie Bradley Jr. are struggling at the plate.

Benintendi has played five games with the Royals and in 21 at-bats he is hitting .190 with four hits and three runs scored.  The 26-year-old outfielder has been hitting second for the Royals this season.  The Royals acquired the former seventh overall pick in the 2015 MLB Draft to add some punch to their lineup.

The only highlight worth noting for Benintendi this season was the spectacular catch he made in his Royals debut.  He would then leave that game feeling “soreness in his lower half”.”

Former Gold Glove center fielder Jackie Bradley Jr. has been ice cold at the plate as well since joining the Brewers.  Bradley Jr., who signed a two-year, $24 million deal with Milwaukee last month, is hitting .063 at the plate with one home run and one RBI.

The 30-year-old center fielder has played five games, but only has one hit in 16 at-bats.  His only hit is a solo home run against Minnesota Twins reliever Cody Stashak.

The season is still very young and both Benintendi and Bradley Jr. should snap out of their early season slumps.

While the former Red Sox hitters are ice cold, the current Boston lineup will look to continue to stay hot against the Orioles.
