Boston Red Sox: Nick Pivetta Dominates Seattle, Throws a One-Hitter, Hernandez Takes the Loss in Extra Innings

Nick Pivetta has been a pleasant surprise for the Red Sox rotation this season.  On Thursday, he took a no-hitter into the sixth inning against the Mariners at Fenway Park.

Pivetta went six innings, surrendering the one hit, walked three and struck out four.  Two walks in the inning came back to haunt Pivetta, who ultimately gave up a two-RBI double to Ty France.

France’s double went over the head of left fielder Franchy Cordero, who was playing too shallow.

Earlier in his start, Red Sox fans on social media were in an uproar over a missed call by the home plate ump.

On what he thought was his final pitch in the third, Pivetta threw a nasty curveball.  Pivetta, Fenway Park and the entire planet thought it was strike three.  He began to walk towards the dugout but had to turn back when the pitch was called a ball.

The home plate umpire missed the call and it ultimately didn’t hurt the Red Sox.

In Pivetta’s last start against the White Sox, the right-hander struggled.  He would only last 3 and 2/3 innings surrendering four hits, two earned runs while walking four batters.

The Red Sox would go on to lose to the Mariners in the first game of the series.  Seattle scored seven runs on just three hits.  Mitch Haniger hit a three run home run to deep right center off Darwinzon Hernandez in extra innings.

Pivetta pitched great, but was not involved in the decision.  Boston will play the second game of their series with the Mariners on Friday night.  Martin Perez will be opposed by Yusei Kikuchi at 7:10 on NESN.
