New England Patriots: UCF DB Tay Gowan Lands in Foxboro?

The 2021 NFL Draft is rapidly approaching and the focus for the New England Patriots has been all about the quarterback.  While it’s extremely possible Head Coach Bill Belichick could trade up and draft Justin Fields or Trey Lance, let’s focus on other players to fill out the roster.

Over the last twenty plus years in New England, Belichick has done some of his best draft work in the middle of the NFL Draft.  The Patriots will look to add more youth to their defense even after a wild free spending off season.

New England will need to add another cornerback to the roster through the NFL Draft.  The Patriots recently re-signed J.C. Jackson to his restricted free agent tender, added Jalen Mills through free agency and Stephon Gilmore is in the final year of his contract.

NFL Draft experts, mock drafts and fans will be focused on Patrick Surtain II and Jaycee Horn, with the latter being a more realistic option at No. 15 if they don’t draft linebacker Micah Parsons.  All three of these players would be a great fit in Foxboro, however with Belichick having the success in the middle of the draft, this is where he can go get UCF’s Tay Gowan.

Pro Football Focus has Gowan ranked as the No. 8 best cornerback prospect coming out of college. They also have them ranked No. 69 on their PFF Big Board.

Mike Renner of PFF would add, “Gowan only has one season of major college football under his belt back in 2019 before opting out this past season.  That year he earned an 80.1 coverage grade and only allowed 20 receptions for 274 yards from 50 targets.”

Gowan started his collegiate career at Miami (Ohio).  He would play only one game his freshman season.  He transferred to get more playing time and landed at Butler Community College in Kansas.  In 2019, he landed at UCF where he played 12 games, starting nine.

The 6-foot-2 cornerback missed the 2020 season because concerns over his daughter’s health.  “I’m a father first to a beautiful baby girl who was born prematurely with health problems,” Gowan posted on Twitter back in September of 2020.  “I have also tested positive for COVID in the past and I will not put my daughters health at risk again.”

“Her health is important, my health is important.”

In his Twitter announcement, he would also add he was entering the NFL Draft.

Gowan had his Pro Day in Orlando earlier this month.  He showcased his skillset in front of all 32 teams.  He has only one year of actual game tape for scouts to review.  He wanted to focus on impressing while there.

He would run a 4.47 according to scouts at the Pro Day, Gowan said he was at 4.41.

"The film speaks for itself, and I guess my mindset would be they can look at me as a player who can develop into a natural lock down corner because I have a lot of potential and a lot of growth in me, and so I think teams want to invest in that," Gowan said to ESPN.  "I showed a lot of explosiveness, ball skills, speed and I'm only getting bigger and stronger from this point on."

Last year in the second round, Belichick went with an unknown player in Kyle Dugger.  The 25-year-old Dugger was selected out of Lenoir-Rhyne and fans and experts were left wondering who did Belichick just select.  When he was drafted the combine report indicated he was going to bring athleticism to the safety position.

The concern for Dugger was going from Division II players straight to the NFL.  Gowan made an impact as a JUCO player, his limited time at the next level could hinder his draft status.  ESPN's Mel Kiper thinks Rowan could be a fit in New England.

“Gowan has upside as a press corner on the outside, but he might need some time to develop, considering he has just one season of FBS play on his resume,” Kiper wrote.  “But Stephon Gilmore is potentially a free agent in 2022, so cornerback depth is welcomed in New England.”
