New England Patriots Draft Target: Will Bill Belichick Select Kellen Mond on Day 2 of the NFL Draft?

It’s been about 13 months since Tom Brady left the New England Patriots and joined the Tampa Buccaneers.  Since the departure of Brady, there has been no plan for the heir to the quarterback throne in New England.

The Patriots will welcome back Cam Newton this season on a one-year, incentive laden deal.  Jarrett Stidham is also on the depth charts behind Newton in Foxboro.  The Boston sports media and the Patriots fan base are fixated on who Bill Belichick could draft at the 2021 NFL Draft.

While the masses want Belichick to trade up and have a chance to select Justin Fields or Trey Lance, there is one name that keeps coming up, Kellen Mond.

The Texas A&M product completed 63.3 percent of his passes for 2,282 yards with 19 touchdowns and only three interceptions last season.  In his four seasons with Texas A&M he had 71 touchdowns with 27 interceptions.

Pats’ Pulpit’s Bernd Buchmasser wrote how Mond “checks a lot of boxes” for the Patriots.

Buchmasser wrote, “Mond is a work in progress, but he does check plenty of the Patriots’ boxes: he is coming from a pro-style system, has played plenty of football against high-quality competition, and steadily improved throughout his college career while bringing a solid technical foundation to the table.  His ceiling might be below that of other potential dual-threat quarterbacks, but he has some solid tools to work with and might present good value for New England on the second or early third day of the draft — if only to push Stidham and Dolegala from the developmental backup position.

Mond is a perfect second-day option for the Patriots.  The majority of the reporters covering the team feel that the Patriots will select a quarterback, but not until later in the draft.  Phil Perry from NBC Sports Boston thinks Mond is the perfect Day 2 selection.

“For me, the best Day 2 option for the Patriots is Kellen Mond," Perry said.  "He's a polarizing prospect, I get that, and I understand why.  It's why he's a Day 2 guy.  He checks a lot of boxes for the Patriots.  He's big enough at 6-foot-3, 211 pounds, played in the SEC, started games in four different seasons, he's almost a perfect prospect in terms of eight qualities when I'm looking for these prototypical Patriots. Ton of experience.

The Patriots reportedly have stayed in touch with Mond all offseason.  Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels has been exchanging texts with Mond.  “We’ve got to set up some type of meeting,” said Mond about his contact with the Patriots.  “They’re starting to do formal meetings, like interview-style.  Senior Bowl, it was more very formal, like, ‘Hello Kellen Mond, tell me about you.’  And then now it’s gotten more deeper into football.  So that should be good.”

At least five quarterbacks are expected to get selected within the first round of the NFL Draft.  It doesn’t feel like Belichick will be picking one in the first and he will probably select someone later in the draft.  Mond fits the Patriots profile but time will tell if they select him to potentially be their future signal caller.
