New England Patriots Select Alabama QB Mac Jones at No. 15, ‘Secretly, I really wanted to go to the Patriots all along’, Ready to ‘Do his Job’

The debate is finally over, the Patriots made their first round selection.  The Patriots have selected former Alabama quarterback Mac Jones with the No. 15 pick.  Jones will come to New England as their potential long-term replacement for Tom Brady.

The 6-foot-3 Jones, threw for 4,500 yards with 41 touchdowns and four interceptions in 13 games last season.  Jones is the first quarterback Bill Belichick has ever drafted in the first-round.  He is the first quarterback selected in the first-round by New England since Drew Bledsoe back in 1993, when he went No. 1 overall.

Jones, who has been labeled as the perfect Patriot, lands in Foxboro and it’s where he wanted to go all along.  “Secretly, I really wanted to go to the Patriots all along,” Jones said.  “So I’m actually really happy that it happened.”

The Patriots have their potential future face of the franchise in Jones.  He was expected to land in San Francisco with the No. 3 pick, instead the 49ers went with Trey Lance.  Jones and Justin Fields would go on to slide in the first-round.  After the Bears traded up to land Fields, the Patriots had their quarterback sitting their at No. 15.  Belichick was rumored to trade into the Top-10, but stood pat and his quarterback fell into his lap.

Belichick leveraged his long time friendship with Alabama Coach Nick Saban in his pursuit of Jones.  Belichick and Saban are two of the greatest talent evaluators in the game.  Both feel very strongly about Jones, and he will bring a ton of skills to New England.

Jones is a very smart quarterback and should have little problem picking up offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels’ system.  Others who evaluated Jones said he can dissect college defenses and he can process his reads at an efficient pace.

“I’m very accurate with the football,” Jones said.  “At the end of the day, I’m on a new team, and I kind of have to figure out what I’m good at and what I’m bad at and just work on it.  Once you address that, you can move forward.”

He has backed up Jalen Hurts and Tua Tagovailoa during his time at Alabama.  Jones will now backup Cam Newton in New England and could potentially be a starter before the end of the season.  The Patriots new quarterback is excited and ready to take advantage of his new opportunity.

“At the end of the day, you kind of want to just get the right fit,” Jones said.  “You’ve got to take the opportunity and take advantage of it, learn the new system, learn the new coaches, learn the new culture.  Coach Belichick has done a great job of establishing that throughout his time in New England.  I’ve just got to learn how to be a great teammate, do my job and stick to what they’re telling me to do.”
