New England Patriots: Wake Forest WR Sage Surratt a Sleeper Mid-Round Pick?

The Patriots added some legitimate talent to their wide receiver corps this offseason in Nelson Agholor and Kendrick Bourne.  Agholor’s versatility is extremely attractive to the Patriots offense, which no longer will feature Julian Edelman.

A few weeks ago, Edelman called it quits and retired from the NFL due to a chronic knee injury.  His retirement has left a vacancy within the wide receiver room.

The Patriots are rumored to potentially use their first-round pick on a wide receiver.  Mainstream mock drafts have them trading up into the top-10 to grab a wide out.  That feels unlikely based off the draft history of Bill Belichick.

New England will add a wide receiver over the three days in Cleveland.  If they don’t, they will sign an undrafted player who they like but didn’t feel was worth spending draft capital on.

Belichick should look to the middle rounds to address the wide receiver position.  Wake Forest receiver Sage Surratt is an under the radar sleeper type that Belichick could snag in the fourth-round.

Surratt sat out of the 2020 season due to the concerns from COVID-19.  He appeared in 19 games for Wake Forest and was impressive during his time on the field.

He had a standout season back in 2019 where he was named first-team all-ACC and was a finalist for the Biletnikoff Award.  Despite having a breakout year with 1,001 receiving yards and 11 touchdowns, he would only appear in nine games in 2019 due to an injury.

The 6-foot-3, 209 pound receiver is a jump-ball style of player.

The jump-ball style of play comes from his basketball background. Surratt was a natural on the basketball court, finishing third in North Carolina state history with a 27.1 point average.

Surratt would help add depth to a position that received a major overhaul this offseason.  He would provide New England with the size Belichick would be looking for in an outside receiver.  If fans are expecting Surratt to be an elite talent, he’s not.  He is an outstanding athlete who’ll work hard and play the Patriot Way.

He is projected to be a mid-round pick, and with the Patriots currently owning two fourth-round picks, Surratt could be taken then.
