Nick Pivetta Shines in Season Debut, Red Sox Beat Rays 11-2

It took four games but the Red Sox finally won their first game of the season.  The small crowd at Fenway Park witnessed an offensive explosion in the 11-2 victory over the reigning American League champions.

Since putting on a Red Sox uniform, Nick Pivetta has been a different pitcher.  In his first three starts with Boston, he has thrown 15 innings giving up 10 hits and allowing only two earned runs.

Pivetta is now 3-0 with the Red Sox after going 19-30 with a 5.50 ERA in 92 games with the Philadelphia Phillies.

On Monday night, Pivetta only allowed two hits and didn’t allow a run against the Rays lineup.  The only issue for Pivetta was he walked four Rays batters, but the walks didn’t end up hurting the right-hander.  Pivetta struggled with his fastball over the course of five innings.

The Rays had one highlight in the game when Randy Arozarena made a spectacular catch, robbing Hunter Renfroe of a multi-RBI double or more.  The play by Arozarena is an early favorite for the catch of the year only four games into the Major League season.

Xander Bogaerts finally saw his bat come alive and collected four hits against the Rays.  Bogaerts had an RBI double and nearly hit a home run.  The double turned into a little-league home run when he advanced to third on the throw home.  He would then score on a wild throw from Rays catcher Mike Zunino, which allowed the Red Sox to take a 5-0 lead.

Red Sox infielder Kiké Hernandez would then go on to hit an RBI double putting Boston up 6-0.  Center fielder Alex Verdugo joined the fun and hit a sacrifice fly to the outfield giving Boston a 7-0 lead.

Boston would later break open the game and cement the win after J.D. Martinez hit a home run off former teammate Chris Mazza.  Martinez’ home run tattooed the Pesky Pole.  The designated hitter is off to a hot start this season; he is now 8-for-15 with two home runs, three doubles and six RBIs.

The Red Sox will look to make it two in a row when they face Tyler Glasnow.  Boston will counter with fan favorite Martin Perez and hope to see Rafael Devers break out of his slump.
