Outfielder Franchy Cordero Hitless in his Red Sox Debut

The Red Sox new outfielder Franchy Cordero made his debut playing left field against the Orioles on Saturday. The new outfielder’s debut wasn’t a memorable one, as he went 0-4 with two strikeouts.

Cordero would start in left field and he batted eighth in Manager Alex Cora’s lineup. The Red Sox were looking to rebound from a 3-0 Opening Day loss. However, Cordero’s bat went silent like the majority of Boston’s lineup.

The new slugging outfielder had an opportunity in the ninth inning of yesterday’s game to make a difference. Instead, Cordero struck out against Orioles closer CĂ©sar Valdez. The inopportune strike out came with two runners on with the Red Sox down by two runs.

The Red Sox would go on to lose the game to the Orioles 4-2. The loss spoiled a rather impressive start from Tanner Houck.

Cordero was acquired from the Royals this offseason in a trade that sent Andrew Benintendi to Kansas City. Despite the poor Red Sox debut, he is only a few weeks removed from the injured list. The 26-year-old was on the IL due to COVID-19 protocols.

The Red Sox will look to salvage a win in the opening series on Easter Sunday. New Red Sox starting pitcher Garrett Richards will make his team debut. Richards signed to a one-year, $10-million deal in free agency with a club option for 2022. The Red Sox hope he can stop the bleeding tomorrow and Boston will earn their first win of the season.
