Red Sox DH J.D. Martinez Dialed in at the Plate, Hits Second Home Run of the Season Against the Rays

It took four games but the Red Sox offense as a whole finally woke up against the Rays on Monday night.  The club, who looked like they had left their bats down in Florida at Spring Training, exploded for 11 runs in their victory over Tampa Bay.

Red Sox designated hitter, J.D. Martinez who is coming off a disappointing 2020 season, has been swinging a sweltering bat.

Last season, Martinez hit a career low .213 average with a .680 OPS in 54 games last season.  In addition to the low batting average and OPS, he only slugged seven home runs and knocked in 27 RBIs.

One of the reasons that could have contributed to his poor offensive output was the lack of video during games.  After the Astros sign stealing scandal, Major League Baseball no longer allowed the use of in-game video of players at-bats.

Following the shortened season, the league brought back the use of in-game video replay.  With Martinez having the ability to make adjustments mid-game, he looks more like himself at the plate.

“It’s definitely cooled my anxiety of being able to try something out and going in there and saying, ‘OK, yeah, that looks better.’  And being able to make those adjustments from at-bat to at-bat,” said Martinez.

During Monday night's game, Martinez continued to swing a hot bat.  He went 2-for-3 with a three-run home run, two walks and two runs scored.

Martinez’ home run hit off Pesky’s Pole in right field.  The 326-foot home run gave Boston an 11-2 win.

Coming off his impressive first series, Martinez has been the Red Sox offense.  There were other players on Monday who helped jolt the anemic lineup.  Xander Bogaerts went 4-for-4, and everyone else had at least one hit.  The only player to not get a hit was Rafael Devers, who looks lost in the field and at the plate.

After getting an impressive outing from Red Sox right-hander Nick Pivetta against the Rays, Boston will look to make it two in row.  The Red Sox will counter with Martin Perez, who’ll face Rays ace Tyler Glasnow.
