Red Sox Get an Impressive Outing From Garrett Whitlock Despite the Loss on Sunday

Red Sox Rule 5 draft pick Garrett Whitlock made his MLB debut on Sunday during the blowout loss against the Orioles. The former Yankees prospect came into the game after Garrett Richards and Josh Taylor imploded giving up 10 earned runs.

With the Red Sox down 10-0, Whitlock pitched 3 ⅓ scoreless innings, allowed three hits and struck out five.  Whitlock was able to pound the Orioles strike zone and he looked incredibly confident while do so.

“Yeah, that was the highlight of the day, right?  The positive of the day,” Red Sox manager Alex Cora said.  “He did an amazing job.  He was good.  Pounded the strike zone, used his fastball up, mixed up his off speed pitches, it was fun to watch.”

Whitlock didn’t pitch last season due to undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2019.  Before throwing in his first big league game today, he has never pitched above Doube-A in his career.

“It was an honor to be wearing the Red Sox name and giving me a chance,” said Whitlock in the post game press conference.  “I mean, first off, it was an honor to be out there and be with those guys to be out there.  Adrenaline was rushing and a ton of fun.”

Prior to his injury back in 2019, the 6-foot-5, 190-pounder posted a 3.07 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and .265 batting average against in 14 starts at Double-A Trenton in 2019.   He struck out 57 and walked 18 in 70 ⅓ innings.

Whitlock dazzled this Spring which led to him making the Opening Day roster.  In an interview with Rob Bradford of WEEI, the rookie talked about his mindset.

"I'll give you the cliche answer because it's genuinely my mindset," Whitlock told with a chuckle.  "I'm not taking any days for granted.  Each day I'm here I'm joyful about it and working my tail off.  Keeping my nose to the grindstone.  Until AC says, 'Hey son, you're on the team,' I'm going to keep fighting,  I'm going to keep clawing, and I'm going to keep working my tail off to try and earn the spot."

He later would find out he made the club and fast forward to Easter Sunday, he answered the challenge for his team and manager.

“It was definitely a dream come true and it was an honor wearing the Red Sox name making that dream come true,” Whitlock said following the game.  “So I just can’t thank everyone with the Red Sox enough for giving me a chance.”
