Red Sox Starter Garrett Richards Shaves Mustache, Shows Progress Following Last Night's Start

Garrett Richards was sporting a new look prior to his start last night against the Orioles.  The veteran starter shaved his signature mustache after growing it for over a year.  Richards, equipped with his new look, was hoping for a different result during last night’s start than what he had during the Opening Series.

“Wearing the mask all the time, I was kind of eating that thing most of the time,” Richards said.  “My wife was super pumped about shaving it off.  I had been growing it for over a year and periodically I would tell her, ‘Today’s the day.  Today’s the day.’  I got off the couch the other day to go get ready to go to the field and it just kind of felt right.

Sans mustache, Richards first inning against the Orioles looked reminiscent of his first start to open the season.  To begin the bottom of the first inning, Richards gave up back-to-back home runs to the O’s Trey Mancini and Anthony Santander.  This immediately began to draw criticism from fans on social media.

Following the first inning, Richards settled down and looked remarkably better.  He would go on to pitch five innings giving up three hits, two were the first inning home runs, two earned runs, walking three while striking out four.

“Right now, I’m doing a lot of things really, really well, as far as my delivery goes, to allow me to be in the zone a lot more,” he said.  “For me, I feel like it’s just simply, ‘be in the zone’, and it will help me a tremendous amount.”

When Richards threw his fastball on Saturday it looked good and had decent velocity.  His fastball was consistently clocked in a 94 mph but he struggled throwing his curveball.  Over the course of his outing, Richards threw a career high 14 curveballs.  His curveball never fooled hitters and not one Orioles batter whiffed on it.  However, despite his struggles with the curveball, he thinks it will be a weapon for him this season.

“I’ve been pretty fastball-slider heavy most of my career,” said Richards.  “I feel like the last couple of years I started getting more into my curveball.  It was a pitch that was just my third pitch that I hadn’t really developed a whole lot.  But over the last couple of years I’ve figured out a delivery and a mindset to help me throw that pitch for a strike more often.”

Richards outing was better than his first start to open the season.  His five innings pitched was what he needed to build some confidence heading into his future starts.  The five innings pitched was better, but Richards will need to go deeper into games as the season progresses.
