Red Sox Sweep the Rays, Christian Vazquez Homers Again, J.D. Martinez Continues to Stay Hot and a Comment from the Fan Who Extended His At-Bat

The Boston Red Sox have erased the memory of being swept by the Orioles during the Opening Series weekend.  Boston finished off a sweep of their own on Wednesday, defeating the Rays 9-2.

Red Sox starter Nathan Eovaldi had another impressive start, completely dominating the Rays offense.

In his start on Opening Day, Eovaldi went 5 1/3 innings yielding four hits, one earned run, striking out four while walking one.  He would follow that up by going seven strong innings, rendering three hits one earned run, one walk and striking out seven Rays batters.

He would also go on to win the “YouTube Player of the Game” award as voted on by the fans for the best player in today’s game.

Eovaldi has been dominant with a 1.46 ERA in two starts this season.

The Red Sox also had strong efforts from both J.D Martinez and catcher Christian Vazquez.  Martinez first at-bat was an interesting one to say the least.

In the bottom of the first, Martinez took a Ryan Yarbrough pitch to right field near the Pesky Pole.  Rays right fielder Randy Arozarena headed to the pole and made the catch in the midst of a handful of fans trying to get the ball.

The umpires got together and ruled that the fan touched the ball and the inning would continue.

The fan who interfered with the catch was not ejected from the game and was only given a warning from ballpark security.  In an exclusive to Boston Sports Syndicate, Twitter handle @aespinal21, the fan who allegedly was part of the play said “I was given a warning, I wasn’t reaching over the wall.”

He would add, “My mask was off because I was mid drink, I’m just drinking and enjoying the game.  But yea, the ball was floating and was shocked it made it to me.  All I knew was to not reach over the wall.”

Martinez would later ground out to third baseman Joey Wendle to end the inning.

Vazquez also continued to swing a hot bat, crushing a two-run home run in the bottom of the fourth inning giving Boston a lead 3-1.  The Red Sox wouldn’t look back from there and added on to that lead.

The Red Sox would add another six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.  Martinez had a two RBI double scoring Kevin Plawecki and Kikรฉ Hernandez. Vazquez followed that up with an RBI single.

Hunter Renfroe grounded to short and seemingly ended the scoring, but Rays short stop Willy Adames threw the ball away.  Xander Bogaerts and Vazquez scored.  Renfroe would later be plated home by a Christian Arroyo double.

The Red Sox will head to Baltimore tomorrow looking to keep the winning streak alive and where Eduardo Rodriguez will make his season debut.
