Should the Sox Trade for Mad Max?

Max Scherzer has been an elite starting pitcher for a decade.  The right hander has won three Cy Young Awards throughout his career.  In 2015, Mad Max signed a seven year, 200-million-dollar contract to pitch for the Washington Nationals.  In today’s game it is a rarity that a contract of that magnitude works out for the ball club. Well in this case it was a fantastic move for the Nats.

Washington is where he won two of his three Cy Young Awards and the starter was a massive reason for their World Series Championship. The 2021 season is the last year of his huge contract. Even in the early part of the campaign it appears that the Nationals are not a real WS contender. That is why the Red Sox should swoop in and trade for Max Scherzer.

Max Scherzer provides a presence and a skill set that the Sox need to make a deep playoff run. Their current pitching staff has performed well, but a true ace would take them to the next level. A stabilizing force that takes some of the load off of Eovaldi and E-Rod. Being able to slide everyone back a slot fortifies the entire rotation. A trade for Max Scherzer also takes pressure off of Chris Sale. He can continue to rehab after Tommy John surgery and not rush to come back to pitch for Boston. If the lefty can come back in 2021 and pitch at a high level it just makes the rotation even more dangerous. Scherzer, Sale, Eovaldi, and Rodriguez is a scary nucleus to build around for this year’s team.

Now the question is, “What would it cost the Red Sox?” Firstly, let me say that it will not be as high as of Scherzer has multiple years left on his current deal. The Nationals are preparing for life after Max as we speak. There is a very little chance that he is in Washington in 2022. If the Nats do not start winning immediately than the idea to get something now instead of losing him for nothing will be on the table. That is the time when Chaim Bloom can strike.

The trick to making a deal in my opinion is that Washington is not going to go into a vast rebuild. They are going to want to be competitive as long as they roster Juan Soto. And that is why I believe the Red Sox are a potential fit for a deal. Let me walk you through what I think is realistic and also smart for Bloom and company to do in regard to a Max Scherzer deal.

Build a package deal around Tanner Houck. I know Red Sox fans. He is the right-handed version on Chris Sale, but the truth is that he is good and Scherzer is great. Even late in his career, Mad Max gets the job done. In his latest outing he racked up 10 strikeouts. Boston will probably have to add ancillary pieces, but Bloom has built up the farm system enough to where those extra players will not hurt.

Will Boston make a run at Max Scherzer? Who can truly say unless you are in the Sox front office? Should they take a chance to try and acquire Max Scherzer? I think that answer is a resounding yes!

  1. I'd probably think that is a possibility but 2 issues. 1)We need to make sure we're legit in it to need him and 2)He walks, which means we let all the Houlk time go for limited Max and maybe keep him, maybe not. No deal to me.
