Boston Red Sox: Danny Santana Has Provided a Spark to the Top of the Order Since His Call-up

Chaim Bloom focused on versatility with some of his offseason free agent moves this past winter and spring.  Back in early March, Bloom signed utility man Danny Santana on a minor-league deal.  The move was to help provide the Red Sox with some versatility and depth.

After already adding Kiké Hernández and Marwin Gonzalez, Santana gave Boston a player who could play all over the diamond this season.  Following the signing of Santana, he was hospitalized with a right foot infection.  Santana had a legitimate shot at cracking the Red Sox roster out of Spring Training, but the foot infection derailed his start.

Santana would rehab down in the Red Sox system.  While down in the minors, the veteran swung an extremely hot bat.  While rehabbing with Triple-A Worcester, he hit .450, 9-for-20, with two home runs and two doubles.

On Friday night, Santana would finally make his Red Sox debut against the Philadelphia Phillies.  Santana didn’t waste any time to get acclimated back in the big leagues.  He hit his first home run of the season in an 11-3 rout of the Phillies.  He would also add another home run on Saturday night when he golfed a pitch into the seats.

Santana led off for the Red Sox and played first base.  For the first time since Hernandez went on the injured list, the Red Sox had someone who could project as a leadoff hitter for this offense.

“To this point, it was a lot of work.  Sometimes, I sat at home and felt frustrated because I can’t play,” Santana said.  “I watched my teammates and old teammates playing and I was just sitting at home watching TV and seeing them play.  It made me feel bad.  Now, I’m really happy I’ve got a new opportunity and I’m going to enjoy it.”

The 30-year-old utility man has played the entire series in Philadelphia and has already hit two home runs.

Boston will be hoping to tap into some of the 2019 magic that Santana provided while a member of the Rangers.  He hit .283 with 28 homers and 81 RBIs in 130 games.  Red Sox Manager Alex Cora said he envisions Santana playing at first base, second base and center field.  “We’re going to move him around, just like Marwin and Enrique,” Cora said.
