Boston Red Sox: Franchy Cordero Finally Has a Breakout Game, ‘Happy That I was Able to Contribute’

Red Sox outfielder Franchy Cordero was 0-for-25 entering Thursday’s rubber match against the Tigers.  The maligned outfielder has been putrid for the Red Sox this season, but his bat finally showed some life.

Cordero would deliver big time off the bench.  He went 3-for-5 with an RBI double.  He would also score three runs in the Red Sox 12-9 win over the Tigers at Fenway Park.

Manager Alex Cora called upon Cordero in the first inning following an injury to Kiké Hernandez, who left the game with right hamstring tightness after doubling.

Cordero collected his first hits since facing White Sox starter Lucas Giolito back on Patriots Day.  The outfielder has been the subject to massive criticism from Red Sox fans and the media as of late.

Cora and his coaching staff have been working with Cordero on finding his swing.

“Obviously it was tough.  This is a hard game.  If it was easy, then everybody would be able to do it,” Cordero said about his slump though translator Bryan Almonte.  “But I just kept working.  I was working hard with the coaches.  I spoke to a lot of the guys.  A lot of my teammates came up to me and would always try to give me advice as well.  And coaches such as (Jason) Varitek, he came up to me about hitting.  Just everyone.  It was a team effort in trying to get me right.  And I’m just happy I was able to have a good game today.”

Cora has said that Cordero has been putting in the work to improve.  “Good to see him smile and contribute,” Cora said.  “He made a nice play in left field, too.  It’s not easy.  Hitting at this level is not easy.  People think he’s not putting in work.”

The Red Sox are hopeful that Cordero can build off of Thursday’s performance.  “Obviously I’m really happy that I was able to contribute to today’s win.  But I was ready whenever I had to be,” said Cordero.
