Boston Red Sox: Garrett Richards Wednesday Night Wasn’t Pretty, Walks Four But Earns His Fourth Win Over the Blue Jays

Garrett Richards season started off miserable and fans were ready to exile the veteran right-hander.  However, since his April 21 start, where he earned a no decision against the Blue Jays, he’s won four out of his last five starts.

On Wednesday night, Richards earned his fourth win of the season against the same Blue Jays team.  Richards stat line wasn’t the prettiest.  He went 6 ⅔ innings, allowing seven hits, four walks and striking out five batters.

His offense gave Richards a five run lead before he could take the mound.  Kiké Hernandez led the game off with a double.  Alex Verdugo and J.D. Martinez went back-to-back in the first, immediately giving Boston a 3-0 lead.

Christian Vazquez grounded out, scoring Xander Bogaerts, and Bobby Dalbec doubled to right center scoring Rafael Devers.

Richards would have all the offense he needed.  Up 5-0, he would take the mound and get to work.

“It was a good battle day,” Richards said.  “I didn’t necessarily feel like I had my best stuff but was able to make it work.”

Richards would give a run back in the first inning after allowing the first three runners to get on base.  Vladimir Guerrero Jr. made it 5-1 after hitting an RBI double in the bottom half of the first.

Over the last four starts, Richards had a 2.16 ERA.  Richards wasn’t sharp on Wednesday, but was good enough to earn his fourth victory of the season.

Red Sox Pitching Coach Dave Bush and Manager Alex Cora have trusted the veteran right-hander all season.  The two have worked with Richards and he has seemingly corrected what plagued him to start the season.

“We identified a few pitchers throughout the off-season and he was on top of the list,” said Cora.  “We know the stuff.  Obviously, last year, it seemed like he was finding himself coming from surgery.  It was just a matter of time.  We felt that way.

“We trusted the player.  We decided to move on (him) and now he’s here and he’s doing an outstanding job,” Cora said.

Richards has thrown more curveballs and elevated his fastball over the last five starts.  He’s looked like a completely different pitcher for the Red Sox.  Richards, who has taken a lot of heat since signing his $10 million deal with Boston this season, is finally quieting the doubters.

“Sometimes you try to make big adjustments, and for him, it was the other way around,” Cora said.  “It was simplifying the windup, being more in a straight line to the plate and throwing more competitive pitches.  He has done that and he is going deep into games.  He was one pitch away from giving us seven today.  We’re very pleased with the way he’s throwing the ball.”
