Ex-Red Sox Andrew Benintendi is Starting to Heat Up for the Royals, Franchy Cordero ‘In a Bad Place’

Former Red Sox outfielder Andrew Benintendi struggled to start his career with the Royals.  But since he has been dropped to seventh in their lineup, he’s begun to find himself at the plate.

Benintendi has gone 11-for-27, hitting .407 with three home runs and six RBI’s over the last eight games.  This comes after he started the season hitting a mere .216 and looking lost at the plate.

On Saturday, Benintendi had three hits, two of those hits were home runs.  He would lead his team in hits in the Royals 11-3 win over the Twins.

The Red Sox traded Benintendi back in February in a deal that acquired Cordero from the Royals and minor-league pitcher Josh Winckowski, who came from the Mets.

Meanwhile, while Benintendi is starting to find himself at the plate, Franchy Cordero continues to struggle.

Cordero is just 9-for-51, hitting .176 with a .236 on-base percentage in 20 games.  He has struck out 26 times in 55 plate appearances.

Red Sox manager Alex Cora commented on his outfielder saying, “I think the most important thing is controlling the strike zone.  He’s been expanding up, expanding down.  He’s in a bad place.  Let’s be honest.”

Cordero went 0-for-4 in Boston’s loss to the lowly Rangers, 8-6 on Saturday.  He’s now hitting .167 on the season, in fact, the bottom of the lineup is struggling along with him.

In Saturday’s loss to the Rangers, Bobby Dalbec, Hunter Renfroe and Cordero went 2-for-13, with three RBIs, six strikeouts.  Renfroe hit a home run, but the lack of production from the bottom of the lineup is becoming a common concern.

“Obviously you guys see the numbers, we see the at-bats,” Cora said.  “But the last at-bat by Renfroe was a good one.  Going the other way.  The home run was good.  Obviously we didn’t put the ball in play in certain situations.”

“Franchy, I thought, is getting close.  He hit the ball in the air to the other side. ... So we’ll keep working.  At one point, they’re going to start swinging the bat well.”

Cora is saying all the right things to support his players, but at some point his players need to start producing.  If Cordero continues to scuffle at the plate, Chaim Bloom will have to address the performance.

Boston has internal options to replace Cordero.  Danny Santana will continue to rehab in the minors and will likely join the club soon.  Michael Chavis and Jarren Duran could be likely candidates at some point, Duran less likely as the Red Sox would prefer him to get regular at-bats.
