Mike Trout: The Fantasy Fallout

Just days after I tell you to not worry about Mike Trout one ounce, he goes on the IL.  And this is no quick stint on the IL.  The best player in baseball, who Major League Baseball already has a problem marketing properly, is now on the shelf for two months.  Just could not be worse news for fans and the game itself.

Trout has a strained calf that will more than likely keep him out through the All-Star Game.  That means the best player in baseball will not be at the Mid Summer Classic.  Nor will he be on your fantasy team padding the stat sheet for you.  So how do you survive?  Can you even survive?  Let me run through your options, but these will only work if your honest with yourself.

Option A: Stand Pat

  • Don't panic, right?  It's only May 20th and there is no reason to make any drastic changes to your team.  Feel it out for a few weeks by dipping your toe into the waiver wire.  See how the next two weeks go for you.  Are you being blown out of the water?  Are you losing in wire-to-wire matchups?  If your answer is the latter, you get to move to Option B.

Option B: Buy Good Players Who Are Underperforming

  • Here is your chance to make a splash move.  The key is to not look too desperate or unrealistic.  Your entire league knows that your fantasy team just took a gigantic blow and someone will attempt to fleece you.  Take a look around for some players that maybe owners are wearing thin on patience for.  It does not have to be an Outfielder.  Points are points regardless of the position.  Here are some examples that may not cost the rest of your team in return.
    • Francisco Lindor - .189/3HR/8RBIs
    • Matt Chapman - .228/5HR/19RBIs
    • Kyle Lewis - .236/3HR/6RBIs
    • Gleyber Torres - .246/1HR/10RBIs
    • Charlie Blackmon - .237/2HR/21RBIs

Most of these players have a track record that is far better than the numbers they have posted thus far in 2021.  Their cost should be down and you may be able to maneuver a deal to keep your team afloat until Trout returns.  Somewhere on your team you must have a plethora of talent.  Maybe an extra closer whereas there is a team in your league in desperate needs of saves.  Maybe one too many outfielders or a young starting pitcher you could spare.  You have to give up something to get something.

Option C: Sell

  • This is where being honest with yourself comes into play.  If you were bad with Trout, don't think you can all of a sudden become good without him.  Not all years are going to have you on top.  Selling is without a doubt the best option in a Keeper/Dynasty league if you were already struggling.  Load up for the future with young talent and picks.  Whether that means giving up Trout or other assets is up to you.  I will say this though.  Trout's value does NOT go down because he is on the IL, and do not let anyone tell you otherwise.  He is still the best player in baseball and a return on any trade involving Mike Trout should be massive.
Again - just be honest with yourself.  Don't panic.  There is a move that is right for you if you are a Mike Trout fantasy owner.
