New England Patriots 2021 Schedule: What to Know

The New England Patriots have known for a while now who their opponents would be for the 2021-2022 season, and where they would play.  With the NFL's recent release of the full 2021-2022 schedule, the Patriots now know when those games will take place.

Upon first look, this is a pretty favorable schedule when purely from a travel/logistics standpoint.  The Patriots will play consecutive games on the road on just one occasion this season when they travel to Los Angeles to face the Chargers in Week 8, followed up by a game in Carolina the next week.  There is one other occasion in which the Patriots have consecutive road games - @ Buffalo followed by @ Indianapolis - but those two games are separated by New England's bye week.

Obviously, everybody's eyes are on the Week 4 matchup with the defending Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Tom Brady's return.  I know Bill Belichick likes to treat the first few weeks of the regular season as an extension of the preseason, but you can bet he'll approach that game a little differently than any other.

Here are some other things to note about New England's 2021-22 campaign:

  • For the second straight year New England hosts Miami to open the season.  The Patriots have opened the season at home 13 times with Belichick as Head Coach.  They are 11-2 in those games.
  • New England's first meeting with the defending AFC East champion Buffalo Bills doesn't come until Week 13, but will then play them again in Week 16.  These two games are sure to have major implications in the race for the division.
  • In years past, the Patriots have hit their stride right around Thanksgiving, building good habits and playing their best football of the season as the playoffs approach.  With the gauntlet of teams they face in their second half of the season, they better hope that's the case again this year.
  • Building off of the above point, in Week 10 the Patriots will host Cleveland kicking off a stretch of six games in which they will face five playoff teams from last year (Cleveland, Tennessee, Buffalo (twice), and Indianapolis).
  • The Patriots will get a look at the #1 overall pick Trevor Lawrence when they host the Jaguars in Week 17.  Depending on how things go with Cam Newton, if the Patriots have made the move to Mac Jones by this point, we'll get the QB matchup many thought we would see in last year's NCAA championship.
  • Going back to the Tampa Bay game, there's a very good chance that both teams could be 3-0 when they meet in Week 4.
  • After having six primetime games last season, the Pats have just three this year; one each on Monday night, Sunday night and Thursday night.  Perhaps a reflection of their poor performance last year.
  • In a battle for the most obnoxious fan base, the Patriots and Cowboys will face off in Week 6.  Dallas owns a 7-6 record in this series all time, but the Patriots have won the last six.  In their three games at Gillette Stadium, the Cowboys have scored just one touchdown and a combined 25 points.
The Patriots first half of the season is a little lighter than the second half, presenting an opportunity to pile up some wins and get off to a strong start before the road gets tougher.  With late season games against teams like Buffalo, Indy and Tennessee, the Patriots will for sure be battle tested when the postseason comes around, should they be fortunate enough to return.
