New England Patriots Trades Up for Alabama’s Defensive Tackle Christian Barmore with the No. 38 Pick, Selects Edge Rusher Ronnie Perkins in the Third-Round

The Patriots kicked off Round 2 of the NFL Draft by trading up to add another member from the Alabama Crimson Tide.  One night after selecting quarterback Mac Jones with the No. 15 overall selection, Head Coach Bill Belichick traded up for Christian Barmore.

The defensive tackle was potential first-round grade instead fell to No. 38.  New England would have to give up some draft assets to facilitate landing Barmore.

The Patriots surrendered their second-round pick (No. 46) and two fourth-round selections (Nos. 122 and 139) to the Cincinnati Bengals move up.

Barmore will join former Alabama players Jones, Damien Harris, Dont’a Hightower, Anfernee Jennings on the Patriots.  With this selection, Barmore becomes the 12th player drafted from Alabama.  Belichick, who is close friends with Alabama Head Coach Nick Saban, spoke highly of the Alabama coach.

"Coach Saban's always very helpful in his evaluations.  I have a tremendous amount of respect for Nick professionally, but also personally, and so we have always had great conversations about his experiences with the players and he does a good job of projecting what they would be like on this level because he's been on this level and knows the differences and knows the demands that are different from what they are at Alabama,” said Belichick following the selection of Jones on Thursday.

“Christian Barmore is nice value for the Patriots at No. 38 overall.  He was projected to go in the first round as the top defensive tackle in the class.  He had eight sacks, four QB hits and 27 hurries in 2020 as a sophomore at Alabama.  Could immediately plug in for Adam Butler,” said NESN’s Patriots beat writer Doug Kyed.

The Patriots are getting a 6-foot-5, 310 pound defensive lineman who is excited about joining New England.  Barmore said his favorite team growing up was the Patriots, explaining it this way: "My favorite college team was Alabama, so I love dominance.  It's like the same program, just in the NFL.  I love winners."

In addition to drafting Barmore the Patriots drafted Oklahoma edge rusher Ronnie Perkins.  The Patriots selected Perkins with the No. 96 pick after coming off a three-year stint at Oklahoma.  He played in 33 games and registered 16.5 sacks, he also missed six games due to a failed drug test in 2019.  The 6-foot-2, 253 pound edge rusher compares to former defensive lineman Trey Flowers.

Perkins recorded 5.5 sacks and 10.5 tackles for loss in just six games played for the Sooners last year.  He also recorded 23 total tackles overall.  In 2019, he ended with six sacks and 13.5 tackles for loss in 12 games for the Sooners.

“The opportunity to get coached by Coach Belichick is the most mind-blowing thing right now,” Perkins said.
