New England Patriots Workout Cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick on Thursday

The Patriots have worked out two veterans in an effort to add more depth to their roster.  According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the team worked out defensive back Dre Kirkpatrick on Thursday.

Kirkpatrick, 31, was a former first round draft pick by the Cincinnati Bengals back in 2012.  He would spend eight seasons with the Bengals where he was one of the teams best defenders.

The 6-foot-2, 190-pound defensive back played last season with the Arizona Cardinals.  He would start 11 games with the Cardinals after signing a one-year, $2 million deal.

The former Bengals and Cards defensive back also has a connection to Alabama’s Nick Saban.  Patriots Head Coach Bill Belichick has a fondness for his friend Saban’s players.  The Alabama head coach saw his quarterback Mack Jones and Christian Barmore drafted this season by New England.

If the Patriots sign Fitzpatrick, he would add more depth to their secondary.  J.C. Jackson and Stephon Gilmore project as the two starters, while Jonathan Jones will play the slot.

The Patriots also signed Jalen Mills during the early part of free agency.  He figures to be in the mix as another option to defend the slot receiver.

The Patriots did not draft a cornerback during this year’s draft.  If Fitzpatrick were to come to the Patriots, they have money to add him.  New England is currently $15.9 million under the salary cap.
