Boston Celtics Trade Kemba Walker to the Oklahoma City Thunder, Land Al Horford and Moses Brown

The Brad Stevens Era as the President of Basketball Operations for the Boston Celtics has officially begun.  The Celtics have traded Kemba Walker along with their 2021 first-round pick and a 2025 second-round pick to the Oklahoma City Thunder for Al Horford, Moses Brown and a second-round pick.

Stevens executes his first move as he replaces longtime executive Danny Ainge by moving Walker, who had asked to be traded out of Boston.  The four-time All-Star has two years and more than $73 million remaining on his contract.

Walker signed a four-year, $140 million prior to the 2019-2020 season following Kyrie Irving’s exit to the Brooklyn Nets.

The 31-year-old Walker has battled knee issues during the last two season with the Celtics.  Walker heading to Oklahoma City allows the Celtics to shed the remaining money from his contract.  The move will allow Stevens to use Walker’s money to improve his roster over the next few seasons.

Horford will come back to Boston for his second-stint with the Celtics.  The 35-year-old spent three seasons with the Celtics prior to opting-out and leaving for the Philadelphia 76ers.  He would sign a four-year, $109 million with the 76ers but only spent one year with the team.  Horford struggled to find a fit with Philadelphia, which prompted the trade to the Thunder.

The Celtics will also land Brown, who will gives Boston a legitimate big man off the bench.  The 21-year-old played 43 games with the Thunder last season and averaged 8.6 points per game.  Boston will be Brown’s third team in three seasons, but he will provide depth off the bench.  The acquisition of Brown could spell the end of Tacko Fall as Stevens constructs the roster for next season and beyond.
